Brand New: Marya feat Colonel Mustafa - Hey Baby (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Lets get these pleasantries out of the way real quick - Mustafa your CHILE IS HOTTTTTTT!! with a capital T (As Mzee Tama would say in brackets capital T T). Wai wai wai - Truthfully the first 15 minutes of my day today was spent watching this video back to back, I really didn’t hear the song kabisaaa!! The thing is I actually watched or had seen her previous video Mahaba, but I think after this jam came out and I started feeling the jam - I fell in love with her.. excuse me.. I mean sorry.. I feel inlove with the song
the song I meant the song.
I know with the way am talking am making her into a Halle Berry of sorts, but thats not the case really. All am saying is that its been a while since we have seen some eye candy on our youtube/screens that was singing well and also has the appearance to support the looks. No disrespect to any other artist in Kenya am just saying this chile right now for me takes the trophy for the whole of East Africa in terms of cakes… And thats just real talk. I mean look at the representatives on each coast - Ray C (TZ), Juliana (UG), Nakaya (TZ), Wahu (KE), …. Well actually K-Lynn from TZ is a cake hauuu uuu!! and then there is Kaz… hmmm okay let me sit this one out for a while while I look at my diary for clues.
What sucks about Marya is that she will always be known as Mustafas Boo, thats kinda whack coz she needs to be able to ride her own wave of success. I also think her brand name is a little off - MARY-A (her real name is Mary Maina), am not sure what the A stands for but I thought her name was Myra initially until I realized is MaryA -I dont know maybe thats just me. Lastly its Ogopa - Ogopa can make anyone a superstar with their beats, so I am yet to make a decent decision on whether I think she can sing or not. This particular track is off the chains - Gangsta loving right there, but I cant feel her vocal capabilities, to me it sounds like she is just talking and conversating with her peers.
The Mahaba song she release prior to this one was just okay I would give it a star - this one I give 3 stars for quality of beat, composition, collaboration, video quality and style) but more importantly to get her number he he he he… Mustafa hang on to this one coz she is bound to get hit on by 999 guys on an average week. GetMuzicians its time to harvest this track - what do you all think?
ps. Also Mustafa making love Collabos is dangerous ground homie, mkija kukosana hizi ngoma zitakuwa zina leta machozi na majonzi tupu mshkaji wangu

Brand New: Jangwa - Lyrical assassins Feat. Wenyeji and Shamir

I enjoy great relationships with the Lyrical Assassins crew - Calvo and crew sit on my gmail like neighbors and relatives in your digz. However I have no particular bias to their music, when they produce hot shit I tell them, when they produce whack shit I tell them some tracks make it on to the site and some just don’t. I respect our relationship because its based on honesty - and they understand my opinions are just my opinions. Sure enough they might influence a few people to react differently but essentially I normally have plenty of DJ’s call me out and tell me that I was wrong.
This track is HARDCORE - its titled Jangwa (Jungle) you get the essence of the jungle the forest kinda - the sounds in the background and some of the bottle shakers and other instruments are very distinctive. I know the song is a metaphor of sorts, because it talks about the real jungle - life! But playing around the African Jungle (Forest) animals and other elements that depict the continent is sheer genius. I am not sure if this is a track I will play everyday. Its a song I wont mind listening to and meditating on the lyrics (I guess thats why they call themselves Lyrical Assassins). The tracks features Wenyeji and Shamir - its an interesting collabo - I’ll let y’all be the judges.. enjoy!

K-teezy, Vintiqueezy and Vyba (JointYaChava) - ZikiRuka (GetMziki Exclusive**)

Am kinda bummed that Dyme sent me this track like last week, considering its been making rounds on facebook and on other sites so to call it exclusive here would be an insult. (Sorry Dyme I had to call you out on this one). Meanwhile someone in Kenya stole Chava’s track “Wacha Kukata” and apparently remade the entire track, the video and everything just like Chava and crew did. When Chava called me about that track - I wasnt sure if I should be upset or glad that someone is actually bootlegging his music!
I think its a good thing when guys like your style so much they want to cop it.
Now on the flip side your whole K-Teezy, Vintiqueezy, Vyba movement is still hitting the right spots (so far). This track is on point, good production, good flow, good name dropping (nimezisikia he he he - thats a sure shot to get guys to push your track). Also after listening to the hook and listening to K-Teezy I have to school some folks here. A lot of people think that AutoTune and Vocoder are the same thing. Auto tune is a plug in made my Antares which is used for pitch correction (what K-Teezy’s voice and the hook has been infused by… actually I think probably the whole track has been chapwad Auto Tune.. correct me if I am wrong). A vocoder on the the other hand (without using Roger Troutman as an example) takes a signal plugged into a device (synthesizer) the signal goes through the microphone and is sent through a series of oscillators and filters which create the synthesizer sounds.
Anyway as far as I know no Kenyan has used Vocoder on any of their tracks all these tracks are on Autotune. Either way am waiting to see if Jay Z will really kill Autotune coz Africa’s got next on this production style. Nearly all the new tracks am listening to have some form of voice modification - overall its all good am not knocking anyones style - we will see how long this will last.

Banana Zorro and The B. Band - Nzela

// Slightly older post - was stuck in the sink when we published, we just discovered it never got past the sink and pipes - so we are reposting it again //
The 2009 Kili Music awards winners were announced this week and one of the songs that was on the running for “Best Song of The Year” was the song “Nzela” by Banana Zorro and the B. Band, while the other nominees included “Tabasamu” by Mr Blue, “Anita” by Matonya (won the Category), “Dar Mpaka Moro” by T. M. K Wanaume Family and “V. I. P” by Jahazi . I will be showcasing some of the winners in the various categories in the next few weeks, since some of the songs deserve a spot on GetMziki.
The Banana Band features Banana Zahir Zorro , his father the legendary Zahir Ali Zorro plus other members of the band. Banana music catalog incldes hit single like ‘Mama Yangu” and ” Mama Kumbena”. On this collabo, which ruled the radio and TV charts for a couple of months in Tanzania last year, they talk about Nzela.

But this track is from Dj Ardilles this track has been on heavy rotation on Dj Edu show for quite a while. The video itself is MINI MINI big pimping video .

Syd vs Q-Tac : Clande vs Chips Funga (GetMziki Faceoff - Brand New Music ***)

The image I’ve created above and uploaded is not meant to belittle any women who read this blog - but rather to paint a vivid picture of the debauchery that has been going on in Kenya over the last few years when it comes to creating fresh new slang terms to explain certain times of people. From what I understand Chips Funga these days means a chile you pick up the first night at any night club or bar, and you kulungus (hit it off) on the same night. So she is a chips funga just like the Kenchic chips (fries) that you order to go.
On the flip a Clande is just a clande - Clande is actually from the word Clandestine (which is secrecy more or less a relationship you are having on the side). Kenya currently is a Clande infested country, I understand Nairobi is suffering from all sorts of Clande diseases - Imara Daima, South C, South B and Buru have become the new Clande havens for the heavy weights.
So we felt it only right to put these two big artists singing these two different classic tracks that are fresh off the studio and press - Syd who has his banging track titled CLANDE and Q Tac and his crazy track CHIPS FUNGA. The themes are similar but the songs are completely different so they cannot be compared to in terms of production and flow. However in terms of delivery and message execution I thought it would be nice to see which track would pony more votes. So without futher due -

Jay Martins - Oyoyo (GetMziki Naija Exclusive ***)

image courtesy of DJ Mighty Mike
Naija has this new thing called Proudly Nigerian that’s been going around many products produced and developed in Nigeria. I had to yank this image from Mighty Mike (big up by the way for all the massive Naija tunes). But if you notice that CD it has a small Niaja logo and flag - proudly Naija. It just made me wonder what happened to BRAND Kenya - and the elusive dream of branding Kenyan products - Proudly Kenyan?
Anyway - Not too many people know or have heard of Jay Martins, but the singer/ producer was the man behind the “Good or Bad” hit a while back. Anyway he is back at it again with this big tune titled OYOYO - this is BIG TUNE. Trust me this track has Naija buzzing like whoa! First time I heard it I knew this was a banger - so am blessing GetMziki with this hit.
Enjoy the track

Weasal and Radio - Bread and Butter (GetMziki Exclusive **)

You have to love Ugandan Music, it can be about anything but still have that feel good tune and uppidy happiness mood to it. Radio and Weasal were once part of Chameleons camp (Leone Island Crew) then apparently they split up and Radio and Weasal formed Goodlyfe Crew. So according to my sources there was some back and forth and some songs released between this time - Chameleon released “Abayuda” (Betrayers) and then Mozey Radio and Weasal released “satani” (Devil)
Although I hear Radio and Weasal denied the song as an attack and claimed that the song was aimed at people who’ve turned against them and behave similar to the devil… (Sounds like the same thing to me). Either way this track attached titled Bread and Butter is fire. After that Zuena song I knew these cats are on some shit - this particular song that may sound somewhat comedic from everyday life really talks about how hard it is for folks to make it out here - especially in these tough times (thats such a cliche` statement). But anyway - ill chill on the smart comments and statements.. just enjoy the track here

Marlaw - Pii Pii (Missing My Baby)

Marlaw, whose real name is Marima Lawrenceis is well known for his hits like “Bembeleza and “Rita” among many more. Amazingly enough, the one song that Marlaw did that I still think is one of my best is the track “Bado Umenuna” that features Chidi Benz which was a hit across Tanzania, but never really did the numbers that Bembeleza or Rita did across Africa.
I know many people on GetMziki are always taking shots at some artists for “singing” about the same subject matter which is love/women/infidelity/relationships and on this song Marlaw falls into that category. Don’t get me wrong, the song is a great song which will be an anthem in the clubs, but a point reaches where fans and music listeners just want artists to tackle different subject matters. Props to Marlaw for shooting the video in Kenya. Enjoy!!!!

Juma Nature Feat Jose Chameleon - Mikiki Mikiki (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Normally Dona posts all the Bongo Flava which is kinda contradicting of our publishing expertise because I am the one from TZ and Dona from Kenya - but he seems to have a better ear for Tanzanian hits than I do, so he has been responsible for 90% of the Bongo hits on this website. However when he posted Mikiki Mikiki I told him I want to ride this one and shine with it because I felt like he wouldn’t do enough justice for this crazy beat.
Also more importantly just for the sheer fact that I saw my man P-Funk all up on this video, I was super/extremely excited. Its always nice to see your old crew still holding it down and making good music. P-Funk is one of my long time friends and has been holding down the whole Wanaume Halisi family (which coinsidentally as I understand split into two groups - So I guess there is a splinter group lead by Chege and crew and the original Wanaume Halisi group lead by Juma Nature who put this whole TMK crew together).
If you have been an avid Bongo Flava follower you will notice Juma Nature has a signature singing/rhyming style thats unique to him only. I personally call him the Lil wayne of Africa - because he sings his rhymes and cries on his songs. P-Funk as a producer I think understands the Tanzanian market and understand Juma Natures capabilities. So whenever these two go into a studio, its magical. This song is one of those songs that will get anyone off their seats and just jumping and bumping to the beat. Its a classic Bongo Flava beat thats upiddy and happy. For a minute there I thought East African music was lost and gone - after listening to all these Urban based tunes and instruments in tracks… But thank God we still have some elements of Benga/Zouk/Bongo left in some producers hands.
To hear Chameleon on the track also was like whoa!! I cant say enough about this track -

Historians - Bouje (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

We have never posted a Historians song on this site ever. Funny enough I used to like these cats back in the day - they had that “Hey DJ” song a while back that featured all these Mash Auto cars. The song was pretty cool, the video was even cooler, that is until I saw the same cars on Bamboos video and a couple of other videos and then I hated the song…
Historians haven’t really done much as far as I can tell, but whenever Ogopa has blessed them with a beat they always tend to kill it. Am also glad that one dude cut off his dreads, they weren’t really a good look. he also seems to have cut some weight - honestly I know this has nothing to do with anything but you gotta admit the Historians are looking sharp and well groomed on that video. Not that they didn’t before but am just saying… Anyway I digress.
Overall I like this track, it sucks that I couldn’t get any quality images of the group anywhere on the internet. The Ogopa website seems to be under construction. I also hope this song is not supposed to be “Bourgeois” many people never know how to spell that word. a chile who is boujee (bourgeois) flossy flossy… he he he … the pronounciation is boujiii but its spelled - bourgeois … Anyway let me chill out, enjoy this exclusive track …

Mejja vs Madtraxx (GetMziki FACEOFF - Who did it better) - Poa

We have been toying the idea about starting a new feature called FACEOFF which will put two artists toe to toe on a basic poll. The idea is not to discredit one artist vs the other but rather to measure the value of different music against one another based on sound, lyrical flow, composition and song writing. Please let us know what you think about this feature as the site generally progresses.
To start off this feature we will showcase these two new tracks, one by Mejja titled “Niko Poa” and the other by Madtraxx titled “Poa” (Kamko Poa). The Mejja track is slightly newer so not too many people are bound to have heard it. But either way Clemos capabilities are clearly heard through the track - putting that against a similarly titled track (Madtraxx - Poa) that has been killing radio for a few months only seems right.
Please place your vote, let us know what you think… which of the two sounds better

BLK JKS - Molalatladi

BLK JKS is a group from Johannesburg ,South Africa - They have there own style of music which sort of defies attempts to pigeonhole them - though for me they closely resemble and look like Black Uhuru in the early 80’s
BLK JKS have been touring extensively in the US and Europe and you can catch more info about them here and their blog.
Brand New: Jaguar - Nikusikize

Its unlike us to post two songs from the same artists back to back - but I have been underground for a few weeks so I am playing catch up. Strangely enough I have been looking at the Ogopa Youtube Channel lately and I am so impressed with the quality of music, the quality of the videos and the general direction the production house has taken. I particularly like the fact that Ogopa doesn’t try to do many things, they stick to what they are good at and do it well. If Ogopa was run by other people, they’d have a radio station, TV station, events company, beer company, and Biro pens and anything that could build the brand further and diversify their products - but NOOO Francis and Lucas Bikedo have managed to steer their company into Namibia building Ogopa Butterfly and churning out more hits than we can ever imagine.
Personally I respect that…
So a few weeks back when I got the Nikusikize track from Jaguar I knew it was an instant hit and definitely an Ogopa beat. There was no questions asked, I find this track more promising than the previous one I posted (Tayari). Maybe its the catchy hook or the repetitive hook style…

Brand New: Joey - Get it Right (GetMziki Exclusive *)

I love disclaimers, because its all about removing responsibility for the “matope” you want to say. So here is my disclaimer for this post - I am indirectly affiliated with Joey by virtue of marriage and friendship he he he .. . one of my good friends is married to one of the sisters so i guess that makes it almost difficult to talk shit about this artist huh?
Also the fact that she is Fulaaaayyyyy (Fly) also just adds insult to injury - its like how do you find something wrong with her? Well gifted she is - generally most Kao’s are, Joey Muthegi lived in the US - Michigan and DC. I guess she developed her lyrical capabilities somewhere in between these two states because her delivery is often on point. Now generally I would have all good things to say but i think right now for a female rapper to come out and make it, is seriously tough/difficult. I am not sure if many Kenyans look at STL as a successful artists? I am not sure what makes a successful artist - but to me these are tough times especially if you are a female rapper from Africa. Joey can flow and she can rhyme thats not debatable - she also is sick with the open mic and spoken word. (little does she know i put her on the map at Capital FM - he he he) She has been on blogs long before anyone even realized she is a poet.. And I followed her journeys Keenly.
One day I told Chao of Capital FM - Yo watch out for this chile she will be a star… little did I know she would be in Kenya doing her own thing. So after all is said and done what do I really think of the track or of Joey… Well she is FINE - She is talented (she has the Media fundamentals on lock, communications and all that academic accomplishment), She has the flow and most of all she can write. But something is missing // She is missing an edge or an X factor. I think without the X factor Joey will just be Joey. With all the love I have for her - I think she needs to find something or a feel or flow that will distinguish her from everyone else.
Otherwise here is the track for all y’all to enjoy.
ps. Joey if you read this - I really don’t like that BLANKETS and WINE concept // somethings gotta give, Blankets and Wine???? we need a side conversation about that whole concept and production

Brand New: Jaguar - Tayari (GetMziki Exclusive *)

Damn! I have been AWOL for a while - its been weeks since I’ve posted any song, I had some personal family business to attend to - but now that I am back I need to process this back log. I am glad the rest of the GM team managed to update the site and make sure stuff stays fresh. However not to brag - but I always got the fresh shit from Kenya & Naija:-) (ps. I am feeling that Zimboo stuff).
That said I have been sitting on this Jaguar song for a while now, the track is called kama uko tayari featuring some chile I am not sure who she is. Jaguar has been touring the US over the last few months, although I personally haven’t had the chance to sit and talk to him. I am not such a fan of this song but there has been some underground movement claiming that this song is the shit. The track sounds coast-ish… but I could be wrong. I listened to it a few times but am not really feeling it - I think Jaguar needs to switch his style up - its 2009. You need to come out with BANGERS…
Either way enjoy tayari here.

Prince Zimboo - Lightswitch
I just had to do a post on Prince Zimboo - the story is that Prince Zimboo is from somewhere in Africa has 999 wives and is traveling the world to find wife 1000. But Prince Zimboo really is an alter ego of the Jamaican producer - Assaney Morris. The parody aside Prince Zimboo has very hilarious lyrics on Lightswitch - “woman, you may not look good in the day, but your beauty is only a light switch away”.

Esau Mwamwaya - Sister Betina
We been fans of Esau Mwamwaya ever since first heard of him. Esau is from Malawi and mostly sings in Chichewa which for me sounds more authentic than if he was singing on the same beats in English. Sister Betina is an interesting track - The beat combination is sick, its a combination of like 3 or 4 styles it has a kwaito feel, a dancehall beat and HipHop Aliyah/Timberland Try Again sample. Checkout a live video of his onair performance and at the bottom download Sister Betina.

Juju Feat Kynami - Mimi Ndio Hustler

Many Kenyan artists based overseas have been hitting me up with their music either to showcase on GetMziki or have them on my street albums, so I will try and post some of the songs in the next coming weeks, just to give them a platform to be heard and get the necessary feedback from people. Juju is a Kenyan artist based in Kansas City and has been grinding for a minute juggling in party promotions and doing the music thing. He gave me this street single a couple of months ago and I was really impressed with the song. Its one of those catchy street songs that you’ll find yourself singing to, especially when you need to get pumped up either when getting ready to go to the clubs, hit the highway for some road trip or when going out for a soccer game. The song features Kynami who has been featured on GetMziki before and who together with Juju make up the group K-Locs. If they keep on with thier constant grind and hitting people with good consistent quality music, K-Locs are on thier way to going places. Enjoy!!!
