Mixtape Fridays : CITI KANJO

It’s another edition of mixtape Fridays and this time it’s a “Citi Kanjo” affair featuring various tracks from Africa that are currently ruling the airwaves or dance floors. Some of the tracks have been featured on GetMziki and some are brand new exclusives and world premiers. With so many mixes and mixtapes being released, you cannot really differentiate one from the since most of them either have the same song selection or basic format and very few of the mixes out there are out to break artists.

On the mix that is interlaced with “Citi Kanjo” skits, we have tons of tracks that are hot either on the streets, radio or clubs, so there’s definitely something out there for everyone. Big shout out’s to all the artists out there who have been sending us music and drops. Thanks also to Leo faya for allowing us to use the skits on the mixtape.

Enjoy!!!!

Toxic – It is You (Bin It Or Spin It)

It’s definitely hard to please everybody and although we have die hard GetMziki fans across the world we have a few people out there who still believe we don’t support upcoming artists even after we started the “Spin it or Bin It” feature where we showcased random tracks we got from artists out there who are on the grind. You can check out the first and second Spin it or Bin it features we’ve had so far. We are in the process of tallying the final votes to see which artist will be spinned or binned.

On the flip side we have “new artists” like Toxic who have been on the entertainment scene for a while now, but are now doing the artist thing. On this feature we decided to “present” her to everyone out there by copying and pasting what she had on her Reverbnation page.

“Juliet Kwamboka Mochabo, also known as Toxic to many begun her music career as a dancer officially in 2006 after getting off State House Girls High School. She ran a dance troop under the name Toxic Dancers since October 2007 and in 2009 stopped doing live performances as a dancer. In those three years she managed to work with big names in the local and International Industry such as Jua Cali & Wyclef Jean at the Mama Awards in 2009. in the year 2010, August she decided to get back in the entertainment scene as a Singer & Choreographer. She hopes that her music will reach thousands and make them believe that so long as you have talent and believe in yourself. You will succeed!”

BIN IT OR SPIN IT!!!!!

Thunder Voices – Mama Mwenye Nyumba (****GetMziki Exclusive)

One of the nominees for the “studio of the year” award in the 2010 Kenya Coast awards was “Thunder sounds” studio. They have been on the grind for a while now and its slowly showing by the number or artists they have signed and the number of songs they are getting major airplay on the radio.

We have people out there that say we don’t showcase upcoming artists or recording studios and although we would like to “support” artists we really have standards here at GetMziki and we don’t really showcase music just to promote artists since we always strive for quality and consistency in the content we publish. We have featured Thunder studios artists here with CLD, Ohzy and they are definitely doing positive things in terms of music production and artist management.

On this new track that features a couple of Thunder sounds artists going by the name “Thunder voices” in-house producer Amz enlists CLD, Jeffarizo, Lodyboy, Ohzy, Tee, Danidia, Sultan, Salis,Draft, Coolboy, Dazlah and Dodger for a great track. We have been getting tons of tracks from the camp and from what we have so far, the studio is on the rise to greater things.

“Mama Mwenye Nyumba” showcases the great music coming from the camp. The beat is catchy and everyone on the track comes out strong proving why they are signed to the stable.

Enjoy!!!

Bamboo Feat Vicki – Mama Africa 2 (***GetMziki Exclusive)

I was just going thru my music emails and realized we had “lost” this track between the tons of emails we have. Initially Leo was to bless the GetMziki folks with the track, but with everything else we try and accomplish, I decided to jump on this and ride with “Mama Africa 2″.

There is not really 2 much to say about the track, but pure hotness. If you really are a music fan, then this is one of the tracks that stay in constant rotation in your playlist. I mean, with Vicki on the chorus and Bamboo on the verses, the track is straight fun, fresh and just something that speaks volumes on the musical talent we have in Africa. The beat is sick and something you would hear on urban radio stations, then for Bamboo to come in and talk about

Mapenzi Tele, Nimekaa Kwenye Benz Mbele
Nikiongea na Manzi Kele, Napanaga Vile nitapiga Makelele

Whoa!!!!!!.

We have artists that always make you wanna listen to every single lyric in songs and the sick combination of the family duo is just way ill for anybody to ignore the great tracks coming out of that camp. Bamboo, people need to start hearing this on a larger scale and in a 2010 mixtape venue. The streets, radio and clubs need to hear this.

Africa stand up!!!!

Mixtape Fridays: Tabi Bonney

On this mixtape Friday I decided to hit my local Bodega and get you one of the rising stars with roots in Africa. He’s been on the grind for a while now and slowly joining people like Akon, K-Naan, Wale and French Montana by putting Africa on the map.

Just the other day we were having this discussion about how many artists from Africa just slowly fizzle with time when they move overseas. One of the reasons is most of them are caught up in the limbo of “should I do music for the people in Africa or for the people here”. I know many artists from Africa in the US are also caught up in that “floating” world where they try and figure out the recipe and with time just end up getting frustrated. My take has always been to do music for the people that are closest to you since you will have a natural connection to them and also be able to better off when you start marketing your music. So if you are in the US, structure your music and hustle mode to the people here and not just Africans but everyone!!!!. Consider this. Imagine if K-Naan only made music targeting the Somali people or Akon just targeted the Senegalese folks when he did ‘Locked up”. Where would they be now??? I’ve always said that the average music fan likes jumping on bandwagons, so if you make great music, craft hits and stay consistent in your hustle folks around the world including Africa will join your movement. Also when artists move from the motherland, they loose touch with most of the things back home including the local slang, fashion and just life in general, so when they try and target that audience they come out as “forcing it”.

Tabi Bonney, is originally from Lome, Togo and has been living in Washington DC for a while now. He has been featured in XXL, the Source and other known publications and he’s releasing his debut album soon. Tabi, figured out the formula. I’m in the US so I’ll do music catering to the folks here. He has had a couple of songs being played on DC radio and MTV2 including “Beat Rock” and “Syce It” and ‘Nothing like a Hero”. I have been bumping to his mixtape “A Place Called Stardom” for sometime now and it’s definitely worth checking out. Making guest appearances are Wale, Raheem Devaughn, GZA, Jovi Rockwell, Curren$y and more. Beats come courtesy of such heavyweight producers as The Alchemist, Cosmo and Jon Redwine.

Keep doing what you doing Tabi!!!

Enjoy

Nali Katana – Wapi (Artist On The Grind)

Every now and then you get to listen to music that really captures the pillars of Hip-hop culture in terms of creativity and rhymes. One of the freshmen of 2010 who is slowly creating a buzz for himself is Nali Katana, who is really going out of the box by catering to an audience that is out there that still listens to the punch lines and lyrical flow.

Currently living in Canada, Nali originally from Kenya released this single ‘Wapi Katana” a few months ago and it’s slowly been bubbling on the streets and media outlets. I first heard about him when I listened and saw his video to “Letter to E-Sir” where basically analyzed E-Sir’s “Nimefika” album from the 1st track to the last…

Niaje E-sir siku mingi bana,
Leo ni leo mambo-leonard si ni ungwana,
Ilibidi ngoma moja nikuhonor,
Nimefika Album si iliwanga tu noma…

With Nali, those are the moments that make you appreciate the type of artist that he is. He has a natural talent and ability. Not many people are fortunate enough to find their passion early on in life and with Nali I believe he has found out what works best for him and he’s doing it the way he see’s best.

“Wapi Katana” really shows that Nali can write and create good tracks. The lyrical skills are there and its just a matter of time before he shows everyone out there that “Mkamba akiroga blunder najiandaa,ka ngotha kuwa star kubeba kenya ka bra”

Keep on the hustle Nali!!!!!

One 8 Feat R. Kelly – Hands Across the World (***GetMziki Exclusive)

We told you about the ONE8 super group a few weeks ago and “Hands Across the World” is the first official single from the group. The group features 2Face (Nigeria), Alikiba (Tanzania), Amani (Kenya), Fally Ipupa (DRC), 4X4 (Ghana), JK (Zambia), Navio (Uganda), Movaizhalene (Gabon) and R Kelly (USA)and the single is already creating a buzz.

“Hands Across the World” was written and produced by R. Kelly and was recorded in Chicago. R. Kelly is excited to be involved in the ONE8 project. Speaking from his studio in Chicago as they put the final touches to the single, he stated: “I love projects like this . As I hear the music of these artists and meet them in person I can feel myself connect. Somehow I can feel the excitement and adrenaline through them and then the ideas and everything around this track just comes together. This is probably one of the greatest things I have ever done, I can just feel it in me.”

The first time I listened to the track the first thing that came to mind was Michael Jacksons “Heal the world”. I know most people were waiting for a club track, but it seems ONE8 decided to go with a R & B slow tempo track. I’m really curious to see if this track gets picked up on rotation on the urban radio shows here in the US.

What are your thoughts on the “Hands Across The World” ?

Mixtape Fridays: Young Guru Artist Advice

We have tons of artists, producers and record companies that frequent the site and although we showcase and promote African music, we also strive to enlighten and advice people out there about the music industry in general.

If you read CD inserts then you are familiar with Jay-Z’s personal engineer, Young Guru. A couple of weeks ago he stepped behind the SSL 9000 to hold court about the enslavement of artists to the corporate labels, who run the industry. Here is one quote from Guru. “I tell folks all the time, today music is the new cotton and many artists are field slaves begging to get into master’s house”.

The record industry, as we currently know it, may be a very different creature in the next few years and the jury is still out on what lies ahead. As the industry changes and more artists choose to be independent for financial or artistic reasons, the model for making music is shifting away from record sales and towards touring and merchandise.

Happy Friday!!!!

Mama Sizo – Kama Dhahabu

The coastal region in Kenya has its own bubbling music scene and tons of artists and record companies. I do not want to get into any specifics and reasons, but it seems that they always never get any props or much needed kudos for all the great music coming out of that region. Things have slowly started getting better and now people across the country are slowly getting to see the talent coming out of the region. I’m sure if I post their top FM radio station countdown list, many people including djs especially in the Diaspora wouldn’t really know who the artists are or even have their music.

One of the amazing talent is Mama Sizo, who was the Female Artiste of the Year at the just concluded Nzumari awards. She’s a Kenyan-based German songstress-cum-businesswoman and has been hitting the streets, radio and clubs with her tremendous music. Vera Hassler, originally from Erlensee near Frankfurt, came to Mombasa for holiday in 1993 and fell in love with the country and ever since has been living there, recording and making good music. She first started by performing in nightspots in and around Mombasa and her music fans and presence just started building from there. She says she writes all my lyrics and only get help when she needs the words translated into Kiswahili.

Many of her songs are being played on Mombasa’s FM radio stations, including “Mpenzi ni Wewe”, “Nakuhisi Rohoni” “Why” and many more. You really gotta respect her hustle and grind, which should also serve as a template for upcoming musicians who really give up when they either faced with a stumbling block or are told ‘”no” by people. This is one of her songs that has been getting plenty of play on Mombasas FM radio stations.

Enjoy!!!

Diamond Feat Hawa- Nitaregea (***GetMziki Exclusive)

We first featured Diamond in May of this year with his track Mbagala. Back then, we did not know too much about his music, but thanks to Alvin we slowly started getting some much needed info and new music fromthe rising superstar .

Currently signed to Ali Kiba’s record company Sharoballo records, he’s slowly but surely crafting hits.  I had been telling people that Diamond is definitely one of the future stars of Bongo R & B for a while now and slowly but surely people are jumping on the bandwagon.

Here is an excert when I wrote about the Mbagala track.  ”I haven’t really heard any other tracks from him but if he keeps on releasing music like “Mbagala” this kid is the future of Tanzania R & B”.

We just got this track and we believe it going to definitely prove to everyone out there that Diamond is here to stay. I’ll just let the song “tell” its story.

Shoutouts to Alvin too!!!

Enjoy!!!!

Jaguar – Kigegeu (***GetMziki Exclusive)

We have featured Jaguar On GetMziki before with Nikuskize and Tayari and his camp just sent us this new single “Kigeugeu” off his upcoming album.

One thing I admire about Jaguar is his humble persona and also the fact that he’s so heavy on the streets and really building his musical catalog by staying relevant in the Kenyan music scene. It’s so funny that just the other day we were having this discussion among the GetMziki team about how artists mature and become megastars after being consistently on the grind with the average consumer not really knowing that they have paid their dues. A good example is everybody now is bumping to Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” crossover hit and thinking he’s a “new artist” while in fact Wiz has been grinding for the last ten years with his music catalog spanning hundreds of songs. Jaguar is one of those artists who’s really maturing positively and expanding his fan base.

I can definitely see this track being a dance floor packer in the next coming months. It’s one of those songs that just wanna make you start nodding your head to the beat. I’m sure most dj’s will be adding this track on their crates and playlists. On the flip side, I’d really like to hear Jaguar on a Musyoka 2010 beat, since although record companies especially In Africa like keeping everything in-house in terms of beat selection, producers, mixing and mastering, it somewhat limits them on experimenting with different sounds and song BPM ranges.

Listen to the lyrics too, since I’m sure everybody here will relate to the things Jaguar is talking about.

Enjoy!!!

M7- Another Rap (***GetMziki Exclusive)

If someone was to ask most African music lovers what’s the most talked about song  in Uganda right now, few people would really pick  Museveni’s aka M7 ”Another Rap” song.

Mr Museveni, who is the NRM flag bearer in the presidential election, first performed the song on Saturday at a concert held for youthful supporters of his party in Kampala and ever since then, the song is the hottest thing on the streets and on the radio.  The song has also gone viral on social networks, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and is being used as a ringtone by some party faithful.

Apparently Museveni goes by the name M7 since he adores the AK-47 going back from his days in the military. He has also contracted couple of top Ugandan artists to go on his campaign tours with him, which ultimately shows how powerful music is and also gives the artists some free exposure across the country and some cheques too.

Why lie, the song is cheesy, but if you look at it from a different angle in terms of a campaign tool , then it definitely serves its purpose. Anybody need a collabo with Museveni!!!!

Enjoy!!!

Sajna – Iveta (***GetMziki Artist On The Rise)

I’ve always said that it’s so amazing that with all the technology we have today, you still gotta go out and look for that good music that is not really getting all the plays on your local radio or on every other dj mix. One of those artists that is definitely on the rise is Sajna.

There are a couple of music blogs by Tanzanians that are heavy on the streets, that I check out on a weekly basis and all of them have been talking about Sajna’s debut album “Iveta” and after listening to the album for a couple of days , I knew I had to feature him on GetMziki.

Currently signed to Tetemesha records, Sajnas 10 track debut album is really good and features Belle 9, Linah, Josefly and Pipi. The track “Iveta” really captures Sajna’s vocal skills and the potential he got, considering he’s just really now pushing the album. My sources tell me that this song is currently getting rotation on EATV and on EA Radio and I’m not really surprised. One piece of advice I would give his management team is start branding Sajna by hitting high schools and colleges since with all the R & B artists in Tanzania, its easy for the average consumer to get confused on whose done what song.

You will definitely be hearing alot from him in the next few years!!!

Enjoy!!!

Navio was and is still part of the hip hop group Klear Kut hailing from Kampala, Uganda and consists of five members. Da Langman, Navio, J Baller, Tha Mith and Papito the Multi-Lingual. Klear Kut is one of the most successful Hip-hop group in Uganda.

Vinticqeezy – Nishapata Syke (**GetMziki Artist On The Rise)

We always strive to showcase artists making moves and releasing that good quality music that shows the growth in African music. Vinticqeezy is definitely one of those artists making moves and really stepping up the bar for the other artists in the Diaspora.

There are a couple of artists making moves in the US and although they are not releasing the typical club songs, the streets are being fed with good music that is on peoples IPods, car cd changers and music playlists. Here is an excerpt when Leo posted the Jiachilie track. “Kenyans in the US wanasimama, na wamenyonji!! raundi hii si mchezo”. Here is an excerpt when I posted the Hauna Njaro track. “Vinticqeezy is one of those artists who is slowly but surely building their fan base and feeding the streets with good quality music. He has the charisma, swagga and his lyrical skills are way out there. He is definitely on the correct musical path.”

Vinticqeezy has also figured out the formula of the web in terms of promoting his music, since he had the Facebook masses going “nuts” when he showcased only a promo snippet of the video a few weeks ago only for him to word premier it last night @ midnight. “Nishapata Syke” is one of those infectious tracks that you will find your self bumping to or singing along without knowing. Great work on the hook!!!
He rocks the first two verses in Sheng and completes the third verse in English completely creating a great track. Iko!!!!
If you are still on the sidelines about Vinticqeezy’s movement, I’m sure these lines from his third verse might make you think again.

“And if you don’t know I might just kill you with my Drizzy flow,
Ask your best rapper am that somebody that you should know…..”

Enjoy!!!!

ONE8 Supergroup (***GetMziki Exclusive)

We rarely report on news going on in the music world but sometimes we really have to cross the bridge and report on news we see fit for the site. If you are still wondering what “ONE8″ is, then you are not alone.

ONE8 is the buzzing new African music super group composed of artists from various countries in Africa produced and managed by the first major pan-African record label and 360 music company, Rockstar4000 within the family of the world’s number 1 recording company Sony Music. The artists on ONE8 are Kenyan’s Amani, Nigeria’s 2Face, Ugandan hip-hop artist Navio, Zambia’s biggest super star JK, Tanzanian heartthrob Ali Kiba, Ghanaian trio 4×4, Gabonese duo Movaizhaleine and DRC’s hot sensation, Fally Ipupa. ONE8 is rumored to be working on a hit song with a top US artist, yet to be named, produced by an undisclosed top international producer and will drop in November with a hot video, also by an international music video director.

Word on the streets is that they will be doing a collabo with either Rihanna, Chris Brown or Pink but everything is just hearsay as of now. The all star group to taking the best in music from Africa onto the global stage, connecting millions of fans through the universal language of music. Super groups are always ushered in joy and hype, but past history has always shown us that “egos” always end up breaking the groups. We here @ GetMziki are really excited for the group which will hopefully open up tons of doors for African music.

We have featured most of the artists on ONE8 here at GetMziki and you are guaranteed that we will be premiering the new tracks from the group as we get them. Lets go!!!!!

JK feat Salma – Kapiripiri

Miggy – Ligi Kubwa (**GetMziki Exclusive)

We first featured Miggy with his street anthem Best Dj a couple of months ago and like I had first mentioned on that post he’s definitely one of the “Freshmen of 2010, that is bringing new flavor and sound to the Kenyan music scene.

His currently touring promoting his album “Coffee Nites” which according to his promo press release ”reflects how I worked late night with a cup of coffee by my side as I wrote lyrics to my music”. The album has 15 tracks with a combo of sounds ranging from ragga, pop, afro-fusion, hip-hop and also some techno. Here is an excerpt of what I said when I posted the “Best Dj” song. “His album features tracks like “Watu Wawili”, “Blanketi” and “Nimechezi” among others and from what I’ve heard so far this kid got some heat!!!!”

“Ligi Kubwa” is a track that Miggy talks about having the swag and being in your own “big league”. This track is definitely a club banger and I’m really proud of Miggy since he’s really going out of the box without a big label supporting him and still crafting major hits.  Djs out there now have an addition on their Serato crates for a 116BPM track that will be packing floors in the next coming months. Go out and also pick Miggy’s “Coffee Nites” album that is now available!!

Enjoy Ligi Kubwa!!!

Christine Apondi – Mateso ya Roho

We just got this track from our Kenyan street connect Dan Mixa and we just had to bless the GetMziki fans with this song. Christine Apondi who is a former Tusker Project Fame season 1 finalist and also Mnet pop idols finalist has been slowly establishing her musical foundation which really made people take notice when she did the background vocals for Nonini’s hit single “Kadhaa”.

She is currently working in the studio recording her still untitled debut album and “Mateso ya Roho” is the first official single. Word is that Ambrose, from Mandugu Digital will doing the majority of the song production on her debut album.

“Mateso ya Roho” is one of those tracks that really bring out Christine Apondi’s strong unique vocals, beauty and charisma making her debut album something to look foward to. The video also captures the song’s vybe really well. Enjoy!!!

Mixtape Fridays: Pam Awards 2010 Nominations

The Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM) nominees were just announced this week and the list was greeted with questions and boos as artists cried foul.

The PAM are the biggest annual national music awards in Uganda, that were first held in 2003 and since 2006 there has also been categories for musicians from other East African countries. I have always insisted that there is no way to really tell how transparent all this award shows are since everything they do from choosing the nominees and category winners is shunned in secrecy and everybody knows so well that in Africa, people associate secrecy with shady dealings. The controversy is really so huge that various artistes including Jose Chameleone no longer even value the awards and actually also asked never to be nominated again.

The nominees for the song of the year are

Bebe Cool – Kasepiki
Samalie Namatovu – Omukwano Gunyuma
Jose Chameleone – Basiima Ogenze
Dr. Hilderman – Amelia

If you really follow Ugandan music like I do you should know that the biggest record in Uganda hands down was “Stamina” by Kenzo. The “Stamina” star Eddie Kenzo and his Big Talent Crew have also decided to pull out of the Pearl of Africa Music Awards, since according to them they should have been nominated for the “song of the year” category. I will also post Kenzo’s “Stamina” song for people to decide for themselves.

Naeto C – 10 Over 10 (***GetMziki Exclusive)

Naeto C aka “the only MC with an MSc” is a Nigerian artist and music producer and is currently signed to Storm Records In Lagos. He’s one of the quickly raising stars in the ever growing Naija music scene and he’s just started celebrating  and seeing the results of his grind  after just coming off winning the “Best New Musician” award at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards and  the “Best Video Of The Year” with “Won” at the 2009 Channel O Music Video Awards 2009.

He’s currently promoting his sophomore album “Super C Season” and  has released a couple of singles on the album including “Kinda like a big deal” which we featured On GetMiki before.  “10 over 10″ is the track I’ve been bumping too heavy in the last few weeks., where Naeto C flips his flow to perfectly resonate with the beat creating a record that will be driving the streets, radio and clubs crazy in the next few months. Its perfectly summarizes the song title “10 Over 10″.

As an added bonus, I decided to throw in his street anthem for “Successful” (The P Mix Video), featuring behind the scenes views of the Channel O Awards ,when he got his award for “best video of the year”. The video also captures tons of African artists who were att he awards like 2Face, Amani, Sasha and many more. Enjoy!!!

Bebe Cool Feat AY – Chap Chap

We got this track a couple of months back and with the duo just releasing the video, plus a few requests here and there from different people we saw the need to blast this track out there.

We have been getting tons of music and videos from Uganda and from what we are hearing, they are really stepping thier art form in a very positive way. The Ugandan people also really support their artists by buying cds, which in turn creates some revenue for the artists just off cd sales. This is a sharp contrast to other parts of Africa where artists usually make money off touring than cd sales, as a result of too much piracy.

On this track, which is tearing up the clubs in Uganda, Bebe Cool team up with Bongo heavyweight AY for a “Chap Chap” club banger with both artists taking turns talking about wanting a “mpenzi” (Lover) quickly.

“Nataka mpenzi chap chap
All di gyals dem say
All di boys dem say”

Z-Anto – Kisiwa Cha Malavidavi (**GetMziki Exclusive)

Z-Anto, internationally known for his hit “Binti Kiziwi” featuring Pingu and Peace and Love with Jua Cali has been in the studio recording his sophmore album and he just released this single “Kisiwa Cha Malavidavi” a few days ago.

This track is one of those classic Bongo R & B records with a smooth mellow groove and distint melodies.  It’s a good record although its does not have its own “uniqueness” as compared to the other Bongo R & B records out there.

My sources tell me that this song is steadily climbing various countdown charts in Tanzania and I’m sure ladies out there will definitely be grooving to this. Enjoy!!!
