Wyre feat Peetah & Gramps Morgan – Guarantee (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
I’ve never done this before, where I receive a track and post in like ten seconds. I often try to be considerate and give the marketing teams due diligence to promote and push the track their own way through media before it hits the diaspora (for most big tracks). However this Wyre TRACK IS FIYAAAH and I am making no apologies for being the first to drop it this week. Basically all these cats were in Kenya last week for some EABL inspired concert that I am getting had some financial drama more than the US economy. I also gather one cool cat is Shaggy – apparently it was raining so much that folks were not sure if the gig was going on…
So Shaggy took a can of water poured in himself so that he can be as wet as the folks in the crowd – I mean how cool or worldly is that. To me that’s a free spirited artist right there.
Now not to take away anything from this banger but I put Gramps and Peets pics up coz Wyre Killed this TRACK (MEANING HE OVER DELIVERED). Clearly homeboy is on something or the other coz I feel like i should take back every negative word I have ever said about Wyre. The delivery, the production and just the energy is off the chains. Wyre bigs up man this is a collabo and a track that will give you some legs you’ll never imagine.

Monique feat Emmanuel JAL – GoodBye (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
So Musyoka sent me this track a few days ago and didn’t really offer much explanation. What I like about Musyoka is he knows the type of music I like, so as I assume there are certain tracks he doesn’t even bother bringing my way and there are some he knows – its like a gut feeling that tells him, this track will make Leo go nuts. So lets get the Leo speak out of the way real quick – Monique is a such a chips! I mean right after Coca Cola popstars I was still locked on to her, she has boody and her cat eyes are …. well lets just say Monique is fine. She could sell her appeal a lot more than she has been. But that in itself is just a bad assessment of an artist that’s well deserving vocally than she is physically.
Now lets get the more important details figured out. So if you recall, Monique was one of the finalist of the East African version of Coca Cola popstarts back in the day. After which point she was managed solely by homeboyz entertainment and I think at the time did a couple of tracks in the Fridge and also at R-Kays studios. So to me she is a seasoned musical veteran, in that she’s been through a system and a process that you learn from as an artist in Kenya. She also reminds me of me, coz her background is Ugandan yet she’s spent a lot of her time in Kenya – the mixture of cultures allows her to borrow elements from the different countries in East Africa to make her a unique selling brand.
This track Musyoka has provided is testament of this new sound that I have always liked since I left Kenya. I have been unable to bucket or to classify this sound since there is no general legacy instrumentation to rely on. The Carol Atemi’s, the Wendy Kimani, the Didge and so forth seem to borrow from this theme or genre of music, personally I call it Afrosoul (Afropean soul)/Kenyan Urban Soul. I see a great beginning with her new style and current record label management. Her new album titled Color:Black drops October 7th 2011. If you are in Kenya I urge you to find time and make effort to go for this release party coz I think this is one artist who will change the game.

Kanja – Cry for you
I talk to Kanja every once often when I get a chance and truthfully its hard for me sometimes to watch artists go through a transformation of sorts as they come to the grip and realities of their careers. Kanja is a cool cat no doubt about it, but if you had been talking to him over the last 2yrs of his booming career from BET to live performances to getting to develop his brand. One thing you will notice is a sense of maturity in the approach to his music, his creative mind and overall just telling nature of the state of the industry today.
His music sense is growing and his tastes are expanding, I think he is accommodating his culture and accepting the fact that he has this large audience of diaspora folks who like him and he also has this opportunity to talk to this burgeoning African market that he probably didn’t know existed. When you listen to this track you can hear the hunger to reach out to different cultures which is something I probably couldnt tell about him about two years ago.
As much as this track dropped a few months ago, we are dropping it today because its more relevant today. We will be watching Kanja’s next moves keenly, his collaborations, his producers and more importantly his writing (message). The future still looks bright for The African King – bless this track if you can please.

Lágbájá – Sobolation (GetMziki Throwback ***)
I want to share some Nigerian throwbacks that I listen to from time to time, this might be a little far fetched for what we call urban African music but to me this is still kinda fresh. So excuse me today while I make this personal post to make myself happy and possibly inspire some producers and artists who read the blog.
There are few artists with as many dimensions to them as Lagbaja – the flamboyant, masked character who emerged on the Nigerian scene in 1993. To start with, the name Lagbaja means ‘somebody’, ‘nobody’, ‘anybody’ in Yoruba. The mask and the name together represent the ‘facelessness’ of the ordinary people Lagbaja sings for and about.
They also reference the ancient tradition of Egungun, a Yoruba ancestral worship ritual in which the dancers or, masqueraders as they are called, wear elaborate masks and costumes. I have shared the video to this track called Sobooooo (Sobolation) which can help bring the essence of this man to life once you watch it and listen to it.
To me also a huge part of his music draws inspiration from FELA – essentially the trumpets and instrumentation is classic FELA completing my days each time I play this tune. PAP!

Habida feat Cannibal – My Reason
It’s hard for me to look at Habida and not think damn – she’s now a mom but looks soooo fly. Whats wrong with me? or better yet whats wrong with most guys? This track dropped a few months ago as well and has been making its rounds. I didn’t really like it the first time it came out. But its slowly grown on to me. Cannibal comes clean with the hook and Habidas sultry vocals add an element of excitement to the hook.
I like the fact that they brought in the baby in the video and shot the video in Mombasa. Also the fact that they have like real “DUSH” in the video. Sio Dush Mwitu like real pigeons not doves – there is a huge distinction here. I am sure it will take some folks a while to understand my fascination with pigeons (like Tyson I had 100 of them flying rats but thats a story for another day). The point is – this is real Africa.
I only have one request for Habida – please put an album together, it would really suck if you had about 6 singles out in the market flying around like Nameless before you drop your debut album. I think from my perspective I am still trying to wrap my head around your style, your rhythm and your brand. Who is Habida? What is her sound? Only an album can help define what your space in the market place will be. So lets see this album.

Camp Mulla feat Collo – Party Don’t Stop (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Yo! I love these kids man. I watch this video and these kids make me want to jump on KLM/KQ to Nairobi overnight just to enjoy the party. i cant deny it I really really love these kids. I defend their music as if they are my relatives but real talk I just think in terms of defining Kenyan hiphop this is it. This is it. This isnt off the shelf stuff this is just some cats trying to tell their story their own way and to me it just works. The video is hot – good quality… no need to put some skimpy chiles in the video to get me all excited. (okay I take it all back who are all those chiles sitting on the convertible??? Whose daughters are these ha ha ha!!! LOL – KENYA man… waaaa!!! things have changed)
Then you got one of Kenyas top lyricists right now – Collo to bless a verse. What more can I ask for? (Maybe my name on the license plate in the car in the video – or perhaps a tshirt – GETMZIKI) sijui. Anything man. Put me on game I want to be in the next video. Two Five Floor.

Black Coffee – Superman feat. Bucie – Club Mix
A few years ago Louis posted a track by Black Coffee which I honestly slept on. Sadly I think if I did some research that track was probably from this very same album I am posting today. Historically a lot of South African music has been under lock and key. They dont sell their music outside SA and for most part their publishing companies dont play nice with US publishing companies (RISA) but lately I see a lot of lenience being leveraged as these new South African Dance tracks start to make their way into the US market – I can actually find albums and albums of titles on Spotify but rarely on itunes.
I went to watch Black Coffee a few weeks ago in Oakland when he was in town, dude ripped it for about 5 hours straight. It made me wonder whats wrong with our East African super star DJ’s who cant DJ for more than 2 hours without fading away. Truthfully until recently Rugby sevens events was like a DJ showcase as opposed to a music experience. Whens the last time you’ve seen Kriss Darlin play for the whole night? Whens the last time you’ve seen DJ A-Dubb play for the whole night? (LOL pun intended).
Peep this in September last year Black Coffee played for 60hours straight to help promote his foundation breaking all sorts of records. DJ Black Coffee also known as Nathi Maphumulo, pulled off this marathon set at Soweto’s Maponya Mall earning himself a place in the books of history. I admire the work the guy puts in considering he plays with one hand – its amazing to watch him and just get a sense of his ear for BEATS. This track is probably his biggest so far…

Erica Lulakwa – Close to You (GetMziki Exclusive **)
I am kinda proud to post this song today because Erica just so happens to be a good friend of mine currently based in San Francisco where half of Getmziki lives. First time I met Erica and we talked she told me about her music and all I could reiterate to her was just be yourself. Don’t try to come out with some R&B album it will just backfire. So truthfully I never had the opportunity to sit and sample her music until a few weeks ago when she released her first single off her upcoming debut album.
Honestly I love it, I love the work put into the first production, the time invested and overall the marketing approach. Just watch the quality video and the eye candy they had to fly to Los Angeles to get to fit into the video. I personally think its amazing. This is evidence that when you stick to what you are good at, you definitely will have some room in this huge musical universe. Erica is not new to music and media however, she worked at KISS-FM in Tanzania, Trinity and at TBC (Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation) while pursuing her passion for music on the side. She released a single a few years back titled “Tafakari” and since she’s found her way into the US and currently wrapping up her album.
From this song you can tell she is heavily influenced by the Angelique Kidgoz and has a knack for Zouk sound. For now listen to this relaxed banger and give us your thoughts.

AY feat Lamyia & Romeo – Speak with ya Body (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
So a few months ago AY was in the West Coast touring and we briefly spoke over the phone. He made his trip here seem really modest and humble and soon after he called me from the airport to say goodbye. Its funny I was thinking back about 10yrs ago when artists would get the opportunity to come to the US, many would never go back. Today artists could careless about staying or being in the US. Artists are so comfortable running their careers back home, so much that they can fly to the US to collaborate on a track and then fly back home…
Here is a perfect example of what the future of African Urban Music holds for artists who can nurture strategic relationships with different Western Artists. Now I accept the fact that ROMEO hasn’t had a hit in years but it still doesn’t change the fact that he is not one of the most accessible folks right now. There are other D or C listers you’d have a harder time getting to collaborate on a track or get clearances but I am just fascinated at how AY pulled this off. I am more fascinated at the fact that he stayed true to his Tanzanian roots and killed his verse in SWAHILI.
If you ever got to see the original pictures of this music video shoot, you will have noticed that Megan Good was somewhere on the production set. That’s because Lamyia is Megan goods sister so sis was somewhere around supporting family. The track was produced by Riley from Checkmate and the video done by the Outliers, Directed by Shai and William Tikki.

Victoria Kimani – Oleku Remix (GetMziki Exclusive **)
Finally a Kenyan has jumped on a crazy Naija track to bless the remix. There have been so many different remixes and covers for Oleku coming from Naija but I think for me personally this has to be the best execution to date.
Vikki Secret or better known as Victoria Kimani (looks like she is going through a rebranding effort to drop the vikki secret handle which to me is about time – I couldnt wrap my head around Vikki Secret.. so big ups to the PR and publicity folks steering this move). Anyway Victoria who happens to be Bamboo and Kimya’s sister was orginally born in LA and then sorta moved back and forth between the US, Nigeria and Kenya. So with the links am not surprised she would jump on the track or get the blessings to be on the remix.
I think Vikki will do big things once the branding gets sorted out – she has a killer jam that Bruce Odhiambo produced some years back – I posted it here (Tell Me). Listen to this bird chirp… and tell me this is not the best R&B singer Kenya has to offer right now. (sorry Mercy
)// ps. Waithaka you need the vocals for Tell me ufanye mambo?

Muthoni the Drummer Queen – Welcome to the Disco (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
So I spend a lot of time online as do many other folks, I spend majority of my time trying to find new websites that are either doing the same thing GetMziki is doing or trying to elevate what we started. I also spend a lot of time finding curators and writers who have deeper insights into Urban African music more than myself since evidently I have been living out of Africa for such a long time I am losing touch with the sound. My only source of insights is the Internet and the few producer friends that I frequently keep in touch with. The challenge with this is that there is a general bias based on what those/these producers are currently working on.
So I visit the AfricanUnsigned, the Musekes of this world and I will spend hours sampling, reading and understanding the music, the culture, the sound. For most part I can tell you most of the sound coming from Africa has been more of less the same. However in the last 5 years a significant shift in the direction of music has happened across the continent as a whole. A fusion of dance, house, rock, electronic and pop has taken over the African sound. I wish I was a good writer, I would educate you guys on a list of producers and artists trying to create something new and fresh that Africa and the world just need to pay attention to. However I am not a writer – I simply am a music enthusiast with good ears for good shit.
The dilemma is when stuff like the attached track produced by Wawesh and written and performed by Muthoni come to my circle of interest I am slightly out of the loop with where to bucket this sound. Everything I have read online seems difficult to describe Muthoni’s style. Break beat, Indie pop, Indie Rock, Afrop, Afro Pop, Afrock LOL… Wawesh would definitely have a name for this music but lately I think Wesh is just having fun with music which I admire about his creative process. I will post some of Bamzigis upcoming tracks and honestly you’ll either say the bhangi these guys are smoking is from Kijabe or basically these guys are onto something huge. A lot of musicians are scared to go off the grain because it challenges their norm, their formula for success. But when you have nothing to lose I think you basically allow yourself to express music in its purest form.
On this track its evident we are on that pre-school musical tip and playing around with songs we grew up with but yet finding ways to make them currently relevant. Its like selling a guy a cheese sandwich with caviar or foie gras on focaccia bread (google all these items if you cant identify any of them). Anyway Muthoni you know how I feel about you so it goes without saying I am just curious to sample the entire album to see where your head is at. Wesh, give up the blue pills come back to earth … coz truly we are writing new chapters that I am not sure if the market is ready for these sounds but if not I know you are coming hard… Let me find that BASHETE!!

Colonel Mustafa feat Alisha Popat – Mera Pyaar Kiya (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
I need to make a quick selfish post today, this track wasnt getting the approval from the GetMziki team as such but I like it a lot and am going to post it by force by force!! LOL. I have no real information on Alisha Popat, I did a quick Facebook search and she looks like she is a singer/poet based in South Africa but crosses border between there and Kenya. I love her voice, as much as it sounds like the hook is in Indian or Gujirati… Either way I liked her voice and the production of the track so much I rigged in the track.
Colonel it goes without saying how I feel about him. I like his work and I like how he selects unique tracks for himself. Without really going into any more details – listen to this banger.

I need to post a few big songs of 2011 that are currently being voted on MOAMAS, the reason I dont post these songs is just because GetMziki is not really about commercial music, we break artists here. Really think about it, when was the last time you saw Nameless featured here, or Fally Ipupa? Considering am about to post Fally’s big song am just trying to make a point that we are all about the URBAN SOUND. So while we acknowledge that there are thousands of new African songs produced each day – we try to stay focused on our genre of choice which is these EDGY upcoming Urban tracks.
However today am breaking the rule slightly coz this song is just big… so here we go.

Nonini feat Chege – Kila Moja (Waithaka Ent Remix)
I’ve been working on a project for almost a year with some producers to create this genius portal for African producers, however its meaningless to have producers post work of what they already have produced or what they already own. So my challenge to the team I have was to create refixes or remixes of tracks they’ve done or better yet take music they love and make them something epic. Working with people like Musyoka, Wawesh, Clemo, Chava and the likes can be a challenge sometimes. Coz they are too busy and often you are just one of many people throwing deals at them.
But slowly this year Wawesh just started going hard with refixes – I have a vault full of refixes that to me are just defined in one word – GENIUS. Now there is some Musyoka and some other cats work no one has heard which I think will change the overall opinion of music in the East African space. You see to me when you give a producer the opportunity to remix a track that already exists, its like giving him an opportunity to work with someone new – and figure out how he would have developed that sound. Its very different from when a DJ Edu or a DJ Dyme does a remix. Most DJs will overlay music that already exits ontop of accapellas. Anyway am overstating the facts here because I am excited. Waithaka has been working on some phenomenal stuff for years but I think these new remixes coming out from his vault are going to change the music industry and ultimately define him as a formidable producer. All this music will be featured in our upcoming GetMziki producers project, but I felt it important to share some of this goodness as we finish developing that brand.
Here is Waithaka’s interpretation of Nonini’s classic Kila Moja that was produced by Musyoka. He added some drums by Festus productions.. neat..

This is hot off the press, I wanted to pretend I haven’t listened to it and I also wanted to pretend that it doesn’t exist. I also wanted to pretend that because its a sample it doesn’t make it that fly – But f&*k it the collaborative efforts of Abbas and Chiwawa are now too hard to ignore. THIS TRACK IS FIRE. I actually will make the shortest post in the history of GetMziki and end this doze here coz I really cant believe the audacity of these two cats. Bamzigi – Bachette (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
As the cultures continue to collide I find it increasingly difficult to classify music. I often like to classify all music from Kenya as either Genge or Kapuka, over time we came up with a new term – Afrosoul. But even that didnt really sit anywhere for long enough before the Kenyan sound started changing. Now often I am locked into lengthy conversations about why its important to classify stuff or why we should even struggle to classify sound. My only defense is that music has to be marketable, and in order for you to market anything well enough you need to define it and describe it in less than 30 seconds.
So when Wawesh and Bamzigi enter the studio I get confused a little because I am sure I am not going to be able to classify the sound that’s bound to come out of that studio session. True to my inference here is an avid example of some genius turned confusion for me but yet still interestingly arousing. Is it important to classify this sound? Maybe – coz when I listen to Bachette so many things come to mind – I hear beats an elements of almost every single country in Africa. One thing is for sure this is going to be a completely dance-able track and a new dance will emerge from this without even being forced.
Give it a listen …

Chantelle feat Abbas -Tokelezea
This track is just ridiculous its not a club banger but I want to meet this chile so I can understand how she thinks coz really if there was an artists that I felt could go toe to toe with Mejja or Abbas it must be Chantelle. I guess the gist of the song is that she has come out (TOKELEZEA) but just how she says it with swag!! OMG … I wish many of you could understand sheng coz the first verse is just too much for me. But let me just attempt to put these lyrics here how I understand them… “Cheki vile hizo macho zimetokelezea, hizo haga zimetokelezea, sababu wanasema hati mimi nakula mbolea … Niko fresh bila cream sija toka Bel Air, natoka keja bila makeup sija podolea, nabado nina kaa poa nime tokelezea, nina bra na ma nipples zime tokelezea….”
Wicked Wicked this is now on my top 5 playlist right now. Can anyone provide Chantelle’s picture or something I need to see who this mama is – so I can salute this first verse.

Stella Mwangi – Lookie Lookie (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
Man I love this chile I don’t know what to do about it, this is getting insane. Right now the love has changed from wanting to be with her like a chile to just waiting and hogging the comp waiting for her new tracks to drop. To be honest I wasn’t really feeling that Haba haba track but when this track dropped on my laps a few weeks ago I just fell off my chair. The thing I love about STL owe sorry I mean Stella (it seems she is dropping the STL) is that she just understands her capabilities as an artist. She understands her brand, she understands her market and more importantly she understands me as a consumer and as a fan.
The world has gone pop, which in Kenya and other parts of the world they call this type of music Dance. In the US this is pop (popular) which is probably the most dominant music genre in the UK but just crossed over in the US in a big way over the last two years all thanks to Akon and David Guetta (I am made to understand that Pop was bigger in the US back in the day and then it got boring as with most fads in the US then it crossed over to the UK and has since then been the standard, so pop is just coming back to where it started). Pop has become so rampant in the US that all radio station formats just had to change and modify programming to accommodate this genre because all rappers, r&b artists and soul singers jumped onto pop to remain relevant. Now Stella is not necessarily the first Kenyan artist to jump on the genre but by all means she is the only female artist in Kenya who sounds fly on a pop track.
Anyway the video is fresh the production is fresh.. Stella is just fresh, I love the fact that she is just comfortable with her brand being STELLA MWANGI! I mean how fly is that. Plus the fact that her opening line is in sheng – am completely floored, let me get back to LOOKIE LOOKIE…

Ally Kiba – Dushelele (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
Okay we are back in business, we decided to take a route we have been avoiding for years simply because we like to have better control of our music files but I am sure this too will change in the next few months or years once they get bought out. So over the next few weeks we will be migrating our music to soundcloud and also changing the settings on previous tracks that are still using our SkyDrive service.
That said let me bless your Friday with this new Ally Kibas. Every time you see a Bongo Flava track it means Alvin is alive. Alvin has been low key for weeks if not months but as if to resurrect himself through this banger. it almost makes it worth it that he goes in and out of my life lol.
Ally Kiba is a genius and I think after listening to this track over and over again and watching the video. I realise he just set the bar again for the next two years for all the Tanzanian R&B sensations and aspirational artists. This feels like Fally Ipupa and then on the Flip side it feels like I am sitting on a Mkeka listening to Taarab (not that I do that anyway). Dude is just good or he has good people around him advising him on what kind of music or sound to put out.

Sauti Sol – Malikia (GetMziki Exclusive ***)
Sometime earlier this year Sauti Sol dropped their sophomore album appropriately titled “Sol Filosofia.” I have been trying to slowly internalize it over the last few weeks however to be honest I think it captures a little bit of everything which I wasnt quite sure if it was the right strategy. However after several listens, I am glad to report that I think they stayed true to their brand and their sound. Initially I had heard rumors that they were selling out and are trying this whole new dance sound and this eclectic sound that would allow them to cross over to Europe or US. However after listening to the album (its available on itunes and Amazon), I can carefully say – the men who brought you the “the Blue Uniform” are still intact.
From the entire album this is the one track that stands out for me. This for me is why I listen to Sauti Sol, and more importantly this for me is why I love Wesh, PENYA AFRICA (Imekubaliwa) and everything in between that these cats put together. I mean yes the album seems to have a little bit of everything for everyone but to me if you asked me to describe Sauto Sol – I would probably pull this type of songs from their bag. The tracks brings out the maturity in their voices, the harmonies, the synergies – its just a perfect African song. And there is nothing that says miro as much as MALIKIA (although waswahili tunasema Malkia). If you have a shorty you like you may want to play this for her over and over again..

I will probably get in trouble with Collo for posting this song but lets face it the SONG is fire and needs to be heard. Collo has been reinventing himself and re branding himself – its a hard sell especially when you spent half your career locked into one of the most successful rap groups in the East African region. But the reality is that the more I watch these videos and listen to all this music – I am getting more and more accustomed to seeing Collo on his own element and I am loving it.
Collo is just a gifted lyricist there isnt much to anything I can add to this track other than just listen to it and be blessed. Chini ya Maji…
