Focus – I have to admit am a painful listener and a poor critic. Truth be told I have Mixes that I listen to for 5 minutes and fall in love with and listen to them for the life of their spins. Then there are mixes that I have to be spoon fed to like. This particular mix sits in between these two consumption habits, mostly because the first time I heard this Mix about 5 months ago I was indifferent. Usually I am one of those people who likes themes, moods, moments and climaxes. So my brain is engineered to expect a set of rules when a DJ starts a mix and more importantly when he ends it. DJ Dyme tends to manage my brain well as a DJ with his Mixes coz they start with such a climax often and then theme themselves gradually – his mixes make up my gym tracks (now if he can just stop scratching ha ha ha).

But for you the challenge is I never know what to expect – I have been so fixated on the work you put together in the past, that I am not sure how to define the future LOL. So as such I didnt really think much about this mix on day one, day two, three and four. So I sat on it. Anyway 5 months later I find myself listening to the whole thing from start to finish comfortably. And it dawns on me that I am the average consumer/listener. I think sometimes DJs introduce ideas or plant ideas too early in the game LOL. I think am just like everyone else – I have to be converted. So to me this mix is like radio play, you play it often enough you definitely start to appreciate elements of it that you initially didnt (only because I compare them to your previous work).

Either way this post is a meaningless personal rant to DJ Fully Focus – What I meant to say is – the mix is certified, so here goes the post and the link to download it. This update also is very timely as you guys gear up for your upcoming November Thanksgiving events. I expect the 2011 XGV mix in my inbox soon. Atleast I know those ones are normally official, they are themed and I can wrap my brain around it – I know Babu will do dancehall, I know Kaydee will do some Kenyan Mixes and you sorta do the crazy mashups and Dyme will take me to the dirty south.. Am I right? LOL so am ready.. Inbox that mix PAP!!

I just realized my Bday passed without updating a Codered or a Blackstar mix in commemoration of a life long partnership with my old school possee. As usual like I say it every year, each time during my birthday week, which is typically around June. Someone from Kenya sends me a mix from an old radio show or an old Mix set that I was involved in at some capacity. This year looks like the mix came much later and probably wasnt directed to me because the recipients on the email were other Codered members and Blackstar guys.

However am always blessed and pleased when I get these old CodeRed mixes. I cant deny the fact that I enjoy listening to these old mixes more than any new Mix coming from any new DJ today. I am not sure if its a nostalgia thing or maybe just the DJ techniques are all different today. I also updated some old posts with the right paths to the mixes and to the images [Primetime Radio]

Take Over DJs – DJ Dyme is one little dude whose energy is a little electrifying. At first glance you really cant tell that Dyme is a DJ (not that most DJs have a look and feel) but I am just saying Dyme is a short dude, I am used to hanging out with some intimidating looking jamas ha ha ha. Am just kidding. The amazing thing about Dyme is that he is just a humble dude – I cant take anything away from him. I always post his mixes because I think he brings something unique and different to the market place. I haven’t posted any of his work for a long time because I felt like he was going through a phase I couldn’t relate to. He scratched too much, he dropped his name in between mixes almost every 30 seconds and the mixes had too much sound effects.

However when you listen to Afrikan connect you can almost feel the maturity in the sets and the growth of the breadth of music. These are the types of African Mixtapes that I like and truthfully I am dropping it today because I think its a must have. Its a simple clean meaningful mix that sums up my last 5 months in the African Urban Music scene. Its that simple.

We are currently overwhelmed with the number of mixtapes and mixes we have recieved from DJs all over the world. Truthfully very few of these will or actually do see the light and day in most of our posts. The reason is two fold, 1) We specifically post singles unless something stands out of the crowd and 2) we cant support the sheer volume of the mixes DJs send us. Other reasons however may include the quality of the mixes and the selection of the music in the different genre’s.

Either way we finally found a home for most of the mixtapes released unless something stands out of the crowd like this mix here. Allen aka DJ A Dubb is not only a friend but a partner in many other things (Heineken Drinking Federation Club). I told A Dubb one day that you cant call yourself a DJ in my opinion if you don’t have two things – 1) A Mix CD with you all the time (your own), 2) A resource online for your work (mixcrate, soundcloud, your own blog eta). The world has changed and you have to change with it, you cant go to an interview and tell the employer you will bring your resume later, you go to an interview ready and armored. Seems A Dubb took me seriously and 12months later two highly circulated mixtapes and a world of online mixes later I realize he means business.

The Dubb DJs are a group of 3 brothers all part of the HDFC as well, but mostly or probably the last DJ crew in the US to be formed and to exist simply by virtue of skill (and of course kinship). Actually there are very few or rare DJ Units in the US, its hard to find collective skill or partnerships in one area – DJs tend to compete amongst each other out here which is kinda pathetic at times. Either way I think The Dubbs would be the next best thing to watch out for in the US Diaspora market. This Mix validates everything I have been asking for in a long time – which is – just good music. Music I can sit down with my folks and listen to, because lets face it I am aging and I am tired of changing the station when I am in the car with my folks or my daughter. The truth is that we are all aging and unfortunately some of our taste makers are not aging with us, and hence the quality of the craft still sits where it was 10 years ago.

I stopped judging mixes based on quality of mixing a while back – I now judge music and mixes based on sound, genre and music selection which I think in my opinion was well covered here. The Dubb DJs will be handing out these mixes in Las Vegas this weekend for free to some lucky party goers – however if you have good bandwidth grab a copy right now… and enjoy some grown folk urban music..

Ps. I also want to pay tribute to one cat that I probably have never posted here but his work doesnt go unnoticed DJ Spinz (http://dj-allanspinz.podomatic.com/) is one cat I feel that just needs to be recognized coz he doesnt really do things for the hype or fame – I see this cat as one cat who does things for himself and to make himself better each day. Allan Guto I salute you, you have heart and I love the fact that you consistently update your Podcast. We have a project almost done 9 MIXTAPES – www.9mixtapes.com where we will hopefully show case a lot more of your current work but I honestly respect your hustle. To all other cats – the INTERNET is your friend, please EMBRACE it and post your work somewhere – push your brand before you get to us. Respect!!!

It’s another edition of mixtape Fridays and this time it’s a “Citi Kanjo” affair featuring various tracks from Africa that are currently ruling the airwaves or dance floors. Some of the tracks have been featured on GetMziki and some are brand new exclusives and world premiers. With so many mixes and mixtapes being released, you cannot really differentiate one from the since most of them either have the same song selection or basic format and very few of the mixes out there are out to break artists.

On the mix that is interlaced with “Citi Kanjo” skits, we have tons of tracks that are hot either on the streets, radio or clubs, so there’s definitely something out there for everyone. Big shout out’s to all the artists out there who have been sending us music and drops. Thanks also to Leo faya for allowing us to use the skits on the mixtape.

Enjoy!!!!

On this mixtape Friday I decided to hit my local Bodega and get you one of the rising stars with roots in Africa. He’s been on the grind for a while now and slowly joining people like Akon, K-Naan, Wale and French Montana by putting Africa on the map.

Just the other day we were having this discussion about how many artists from Africa just slowly fizzle with time when they move overseas. One of the reasons is most of them are caught up in the limbo of “should I do music for the people in Africa or for the people here”. I know many artists from Africa in the US are also caught up in that “floating” world where they try and figure out the recipe and with time just end up getting frustrated. My take has always been to do music for the people that are closest to you since you will have a natural connection to them and also be able to better off when you start marketing your music. So if you are in the US, structure your music and hustle mode to the people here and not just Africans but everyone!!!!. Consider this. Imagine if K-Naan only made music targeting the Somali people or Akon just targeted the Senegalese folks when he did ‘Locked up”. Where would they be now??? I’ve always said that the average music fan likes jumping on bandwagons, so if you make great music, craft hits and stay consistent in your hustle folks around the world including Africa will join your movement. Also when artists move from the motherland, they loose touch with most of the things back home including the local slang, fashion and just life in general, so when they try and target that audience they come out as “forcing it”.

Tabi Bonney, is originally from Lome, Togo and has been living in Washington DC for a while now. He has been featured in XXL, the Source and other known publications and he’s releasing his debut album soon. Tabi, figured out the formula. I’m in the US so I’ll do music catering to the folks here. He has had a couple of songs being played on DC radio and MTV2 including “Beat Rock” and “Syce It” and ‘Nothing like a Hero”. I have been bumping to his mixtape “A Place Called Stardom” for sometime now and it’s definitely worth checking out. Making guest appearances are Wale, Raheem Devaughn, GZA, Jovi Rockwell, Curren$y and more. Beats come courtesy of such heavyweight producers as The Alchemist, Cosmo and Jon Redwine.

Keep doing what you doing Tabi!!!

Enjoy

Ahhh!!! Another year another Thanksgiving, Another Take Over DJs mix. Ahhhh!! I wish the events were as simple as the mixes come out but maybe that will happen another year. As it is my sources tell me Atlanta is likely to have about 2 to 3 competing events this year. This should be interesting considering the amount of resources and finances being pumped into both these events. I guess this is good whichever way you look at it – essentially all this is being done for you the customer. The better the entertainment package the more you are likely to attend one event vs the other.

Actually a few years later and I have completely changed my opinion. If there is no competition in any market then the products just remain flat. I mean why try to do something out of the ordinary if you are still winning it big. I remember during akina Oscars time – the highlight maybe was the fashion show – and maybe Hardstone but thats about it… So be prepared to be sold on a variety of different formats this year better than last year.

Keeping this in mind, this is the official TOD mix that dropped a few weeks ago and was released on their website first and then to us guys next. TOD are good DJs so am not going to try getting into explaining and talking or criticizing their capabilities. But truth be told the first set on this mix is just okay – it’s what I expect from TOD or many DJ outfits… well to put this into context, its not comparable to what they did last year in terms of a local/genge mix. However the second set of this mix is BANANAs, I dont really care what anyone else says but this new crew that TOD have put on the bill is Bananas. THIS JAMROCK SOUND is sick!! Mike Lex, DJ Waxfiend and that whole crew is guaranteed to turn things around. This shit for me is just different and I may contemplate an ATL trip just to see this cats live. Seriously if you haven’t downloaded this mix yet please do so and listen to the JAMROCK set (Actually BLAST IT).

Real talk without kissing any ass – that mix and that whole platform is a good look for anyone. To TOD/Focus for exposing folks to different sound this is a good look, coz real talk we’ve done the same, the usual which is the reason some of us stopped travelling for parties….I love Kris Darling but there are other sound systems in Kenya or in the world. I think the only way to top this would be to bring maybe … ahhh….maybe… MIGHTY CROWN? he he he and its a wrap. I mean who would have known Netherlands has so much Dancehall sound – Anyway From me and my GetMziki Crew we salute the JAMROCK SOUND indefinitely.

ATL is going to be interesting this year I can already tell he he he … maybe I will come ..

Its Friday, so another day for Mixtape Fridays where I decided to showcase some of the nominees on one category for the Africa Sound City Music Video Awards, since I realized we have tons of video enthusiasts that visit the site. With so many awards shows across Africa, I cannot really keep track of what’s what’s and also vouch for the “authenticity” of some of the award shows, but on the flip side, at least they are giving artists some kudos for their great work. According to Sound City the awards ”are aimed at recognizing and rewarding deserving artistes as well as directors and producers of music videos in and from the continent with an emphasis on creativity, innovation and interpretation of the concepts in song for the screen”. The awards will be held in 20 November 2010 and you can vote for your favorite picks on the various categories here

We are really in the process of restarting with it once again. Like we have stated before we really try to stay neutral when it comes to matters regarding artists, products, services and in most cases events. We however always support people that have been supporting us ever since we started the site.

Indiginas has been featured on GetMziki before and he just recently released his mixtape O.C.F “Operations Chips Funga” which is a prelude to his brand new album coming soon. Currently signed to In Da Groove Records, he is busy putting final touches to his studio album and from what I’ve heard so far, his musical growth is definitely evident.

The mixtape features his classics plus never before heard material including freestyles. We also appreciate the fact that he did a front and back cover with tracklisting, which we always strive for when we post various mixes. The bar has definitely been raised with O.C.F. The feedback we have been getting so far has been postive and we really commend the whole Indiginas management team. Big shoutouts to Wambosie the CEO!!!!

Enjoy!!!!!

So today is exactly a year since the King of pop passed away. In reality some would argue that he has no business being on GetMziki, but I think the sheer fact that he influenced and inspired so many African artists – we ought to pay tribute and share some of the two greatest works available online today made in his honor. Since we love you guys so much and have the resources and technology to support these files, we have stored them on our servers and you can enjoy them here (play them) or download your own copy.

DJ Ayres is a bad ass Jungu DJ based in NYC, Ive been a keen listener and follower of his mixes and blends so it wasnt shocking that his mix was well put together. I think if you are an all time MJ fan you will appreciate the depth of the music selection and how he builds up from the 70′s to the current. I’ve been blasting that mix for more than a year since it was made way before MJ passed away, but how relevant is that mix right now.

The second mix is by DJ Eric, (Update: I over stated earlier – this is DJ Eric not DJ Nyandat.. My bad)
<del datetime="2010-06-25T21:59:13+00:00"> as much as I don’t feature a lot of his work here, I think Eric is one of the most talented cats out there – a bit OG at this time in the game but still very relevant. My dream is to host a Dinosaur party with Nyandat, Otieno Vee, DJ Peter, DJ Kay Dee, Bruce Odhiambo, Hussein Abdala amongst other great Kenyan DJs ive met in my time. I think these OG’s have an understanding of old skool that many new school cats just dont. These days DJs mix and blend BPMs sometimes some cats dont even know the name of the song or who is singing… so long as it blends – lets go (http://www.willitblend.com/) </del>

Anyway as we sit and remember MJ, lets keep in mind that this is one of the few cats who had put Africa on the map way before many of these other Bono, Alicia and the likes did. To date “We are the world” has sold over 20 Million copies raising about 63Million dollars in aid/food to Africa. Thats a major step for one album/song.

Disclaimer: This is continuation of the GetMziki DJ Mixes highlight session, this is the 4th of 5 DJs we wanted to show case last week. So please bare with us as we finalize the whole Mixes session.

Last weekend I drove up to Sacramento to celebrate C-Dubbs Bday (C-Dubb of Dubb DJs a.k.a Cyrille Wamunga added one more year to his soul). I love these cats so any opportunity I get to travel up to Sacramento, I am always jumping on it. I’ve lived in California for a while now to tell you that the Bay in general is one place where there doesn’t seem to be any DJ animosity and competition. DJ Mpenzi (a Kenyan) tends to do his events that cater to a very different diverse crowd, DJ Slim tends to do his events that cater to many Kenyans and Africans in the Bay, DJ Johnnie (retired) reads this blog everyday but never comments is probably one of the coolest cats I’ve known in the bay. Then you have veterans like DJ Marto who retired gracefully to pave way for people like Slim and the rest. The thing is you can find all these people in one party at any given time – Honestly Northern California (the Bay) is not like any other state i’ve been to for Kenyan entertainment.

I have been following Allen for a while, I admire his business sense but mostly I think its his humility that has me hooked on his personality. I’ve worked with tonnes of artists and DJs by far this is probably the most humble dude ive worked with. A-Dubb who will be in Dallas this weekend is probably the most talented of the trio but I am sure the two clowns can argue this out accordingly. I however think A-Dubbs mixes dont do justice to his live club performance and capabilities. Last week I had a blast – these cats pack up a club with Africans, Asians, Zungs and Samoans. To entertain all these people under one roof requires special skills which I was surprised A-Dubb handled with ease. To be perfectly honest I think you should always strive to DJ by yourself, because you build better momentum and a better understanding of your crowd and routine that stays consistent through out the night. I find DJying with like 4 to 5 other people just disruptive and confusing. Maximum Djs per night should be limited to 2.

I know this post is long but I had to do justice coz I have never really featured A-Dubb, considering he is like one of my boys. So this is ode to his kindness and goodness – This mix is part of a CD release he has been handing out since last week. In my opinion this is still not his best work if at all. I like it because it flows. I like it because it just is a good mix. I think it could do with better imaging and better drops but from a DJ perspective and song selection to capture 2010 this mix did the job. Through hanging out with A-Dubb I’ve learned that you can scratch, you can juggle, you can mix and blend – but all these things don’t really make you a good DJ. This mix proved to me that you dont need the bells and whistles to enjoy Dancehall. All I can say as far as A-Dubb is concerned is the best is yet to come and you can bet I will be somewhere close watching. If I am involved – It will be Fiyaaaaah!!!

I was going to post these mixes last week but I got caught up with work and other unrelated issues. So please allow me the time and space to post the last few mixes I wanted to showcase last week but didn’t especially because we are on the final stages of re-launching 9Mixtapes.

I would like to give a personal narrative about my relationship with Chris (Fully Focus). A few years ago I wrote/blogged about meeting him in ATL and how that experience was unpleasant for me. <del datetime="2010-05-24T18:55:29+00:00">Basically I think he kicked me out of the DJ booth as I was kicking it with DJ Stylez (but I understand now he didnt know who I was and I can understand as a DJ you might need some space while working lol)</del>. Knowing me (am a hot head), I didn’t let it go so I blogged about it. I didnt know him and he didnt know me so we never talked for months/years and we didn’t need to. However one thing no one cant take away from my sentiments that I made on that blog, was that TAKE OVER DJs was going to take over the Kenyan-US Market.

Even as much as I was salty about that experience I still knew that these cats were onto something big. Fast forward to today, it’s happened already – and although many may not want to accept the facts of the matter, the fact is many Kenyan DJs in the US are still trying to figure out how it happened and at what point did Take Over – TAKE OVER. Fast forward to today – Chris and I talk and exchange text messages about doing different things here and there. For most part I have come to respect the mans attitude towards entertainment, quality of work and more importantly MUSIC. There are a few things you cant take away from Focus, love him or hate him but the man is just talented musician (DJ/Producer). Chris has managed to unearth music that I practically thought was dead and make it sound cool layered on other current pop hits.

TOD as a movement is something I have no opinion about. I tend to think the lifespan of a DJ is about 5 to 6 years tops unless you have another side hustle. Otherwise I tend to think many local/Kenyan/Tanzanian DJs are done within 5 years unless they establish themselves as brands. Some people argue this out with me which is okay, to me if DJying is a hobby then its fine – but if DJying is your career and in 10 years you still are doing the same thing you did 10 years ago then its possibly time to switch careers. I also think the US-Kenyan DJ market is over saturated with very many people who use sound equipment and call themselves DJs. Over the last 5 years there have been more DJ’s in the US than the total number of Kenyan DJs in the Diaspora between 1999 to 2005. Over the last few years DJying has actually emerged to be a lucrative career for many people. Over the last few years promoters have become DJs and DJs have become promoters making the entire US/Kenyan Entertainment fuzzy and cloudy.

I personally think some DJs forget that their audiences grow older too and thats how the Kenyan US DJs lost market share to TOD because they kept doing the same type of parties and same things forgetting that there was a new crowd new market in the scene. But somehow to contradict with this statement its when artists such as Focus/Chris do mixes like the one I’ve shared below you realize that the breadth of music knowledge is unaccounted for. Testament of these truths are well orchestrated in different segments on these mixes that were originally done for a Homeboyz Radio (Kenya). The first set has a Jay Z Mix (pay attention to the mixing & the blend). The second set has another 50 cent mash up with P-Square (pay attention to the transitions). The CLIMAX for me and the reason am all emotional on this post is that 3rd set. Focus mixes Bob Marleys – Zion with Black Eyed Peas. Now anyone can blend these two songs, find the right tempo, the right pitch and the right BPM’s and its all greavy. But not very many people have the genius to listen to the peaks and the highs of both songs, ultimately align these songs and then transition into the next (Bob Marley Chorus). That for me is sheer genius. To top it off he goes into NNEKA – Heart Beat (we posted this last year Jan) when no one even cared who Nneka was. Lets just say these mixes have been part of my social music appreciation sessions this weekend driving from Sacramento. Am truly humbled today to share these mixes. I call these sets the creepers/ coz they creep up on you nice and slow.

I wish Chris and their TOD crew all the best – y’all don’t need me to validate the amount of talent you each individually have. And if it sounds like am brown nosing, anyone who knows me – will tell you I complement and give credit where its due – And ever since Prime quit radio and DJying I’ve had to look to an alternative lol. Currently my top five DJs to watch for 2010 are Wesley, Focus, A-Dubb (Allen), Creme, Mista Trixx (if he kills the scratching) and Dyme (bonus). (There are other great DJ’s out there definitely, but they either are established or are missing a beat somewhere, the ones I have mentioned are DJ’s I am following closely and looking at what they do each step of the way).

I want to do this right and I want to do it quick because we are building a home for all these mixes and most of them dont deserve to be here. The reason being there is no way to justify having a Dancehall or an R&B mix on GetMziki. This is the home of African Urban music not Jamaican popular music, however exceptions to the rule include Mixes done by Africans/Kenyans very own so it really is a fine line. That said because 9Mixtapes is not ready yet, there are two or three mixes that I think everyone deserves to have.

This is the first mix put together gladly by TOD and BS // If there was ever going to be a Dangerous Dancehall mix this would on the top 15 list simply because of the two DJ crews putting it together. My personal opinion is that I wasn’t overtly impressed – it lacked a few mashups here and there and didn’t have the classic Dancehall sirens and Jamaican blab in the background. Reason I say this is coz Chris/Focus has a sick ass Dancehall mix he did for Homeboyz Radio (I will post that shortly also). That has Black Eyed Peas and Bob Marley Zion – THATS THE SICKEST thing I’ve heard this whole Quarter. Really I have been unimpressed with many things until he sent me that mix. I would have loved to hear more of that on this Compilation.

However from a sheer entertainment perspective, this is ONE GOOD compilation of the biggest 2010 Dancehall tracks. Its a must have. I like the fact that they put a CD cover to go with the tracks coz thats the one thing we at GetMziki Cry for everyday. If your’e a DJ and you make a mix, please do the courtesy of sending it with a track list. Its just baseless to upload a mix people cant figure out who is who on the session.

Anyway lets start with this MADD mix I will post 3 more mixes I’ve received in the last 3 weeks that I think are a must have. DJ KayDee has an AFRO BEAT mix thats just a MUST HAVE. Lets Go!

Creative courtesy of GetMziki

If you’ve lived in the Bay Area (Northern California normally just San Francisco/Oakland area) for a while, then you’ve probably heard or seen DJ Lenoir. I really cant say much about Lenoir as a DJ because I moved to Oakland just when he was kind of winding down his DJ career to focus on other businesses he had. However I can talk about being in the Bay about 5 years ago and going to all these Dancehall parties that he sorta had pioneered around the community with another DJ called TOKS. The first time I met Lenoir I told him, dude you need to make these African Mixtapes, no one was taking advantage of the fact that all these Junguz were loving these Congolese, Angolan, Cote Dvoire songs. Lenoir slept on this for over 4 years to come up with this Street attack that I find not only unique but a massive statement to the potential of African music in the local US communities.

One thing most people don’t know is Oakland/San Francisco is probably one of the most diverse cities to live in. Honestly on any Friday or Saturday night you can go to a club called BAOBAB in San Francisco and the club will be packed with Junguz jumping and puffing to Lingala and Coupe de Cale. Anyway not to bore you with how cool my city is, the reality really is that I strongly believe African Urban and alternative music will take the US scene by storm in the not so near future. Its just a matter of time. African artists and African entertainment industry insiders are slowly but surely getting their shit together – and soon you will be going to a DELA concert in NYC, a SAUTI SOL, a KAYSHA concert… It happens in San Francisco and NYC right now more frequently than not.

So When Lenoir came knocking (a native of Congo DRC) I had to open up the door and open it up wide. Mostly because I respect the work he has put into the community in the past with my boy Louis, and also mostly coz I think he understands African sound slightly better than many other DJs I hang out with. This mix is not about the skill and or versatility. A lot of Kenyan DJs compile mixtapes to showcase their DJ-capabilities. I think there comes a point in time where the Mix should be about the music and about the sound or flow. Lenoir could definitely have done with a little less of the the sound effects (too much dancehall DJying can throw you off Len) but overall I think maybe its just a new style – and possibly a new way to get people here to appreciate all these new eclectic sounds.

And for that I designed his CD cover for fun I started with the version on top and ended up with this one here:

Enjoy the mix below:

Many people who don’t know me and read my blogs or any of my interesting takes on life or criticism on different things will probably tell you that I am a hater. I am a firm believer of kill the hype and lets call a spade a spade and not a big spoon. So often I never give people or products the credit they deserve because I am always looking for the flaws before I start looking for the positive uplifting aspects. I think one of the biggest saddest things you can have around you as an aspiring entertainer or entrepreneur, is a guy who tells you – “your the shit homie, your hot, your all that” when deep down he knows you are just mediocre.

Personally I have many people who tell me am half stepping, am mediocre and that I can do better. I have a group of people who tell me to change GetMziki – the interface is too old now, the download links don’t work, the images are whack!! LOL. I love those guys coz they make me want to do better each day i wake up. LOL. I think 30,000 users later I am still trying to do better and to serve this massive flow of music enthusiasts.

So when I pick a DJ and say I think this DJ is hot – please believe me that comes with all the salt water and omena from Kisumu to accept that some cat is just tight. Truthfully I’ve worked and hang out with some of the greatest in the game in East Africa. In the US being called a good DJ is relative because there are guys in their basements or in their apartments with decks just juggling and playing with Serato for fun. When I was 16yrs old I used to frequent some parties thrown by a guy called Nguyo and the Osogos deep down in a place called Taurus. DJ Pinye had a buddy of his called DJ Omar. DJ Omar who was from DC at the time was just BAD NEWS!!! this dude was juggling back in like 94/95 – these guys essentially really just brought hiphop to Kenya in a big way. (which is one of the few reasons I salute Pinye today, however the last time Pinye played Lords of the Underground, Steve Nice or Diamond D sijui… tsk tsk tsk)

Anyway I digress – DJ Wesley’s mixtapes restore my faith in creativity and in the ability to create something exciting and bold. I think right now I would put him as one of the BEST or probably the best DJs Kenya has to offer. It doesnt even really matter that majority of his stuff is software based – to me its the execution of the mixes and the blends he puts together. The guy is just a small genius. I am also particularly fond of their new online journey in the form of www.jamhuricity.com which is a well branded, well demarcated website. I am feeling the whole Jamhuri Entertainment, J.com and the entire merchandising piece they are putting together. I see great things coming off these ventures and I am keen and watching. But for now Wesley just keep making these mixtapes they are on fire….

This month we sorta decided to dedicate it into building local DJs and showcasing new music through a variety of mixes that some DJs had out there. I know there are bunch of DJs I havent featured and I apologize before hand. REAL TALK though is that all your mixes sound the same – I personally tend to focus on the stuff that just stands out from the crowd. The track list is the same and the mixing style is the same. Honestly its been a while since I have been impressed by any one DJ’s skills and for that I almost just stick to singles on genius on my ipod. This is not to say that there are no good DJs – DJs are there – but they all do the same things according to me. And even if they have skillz their skillz are never put to any level or capacity of test.

Take for instance a DJ in the East coast called DJ STURE (and thats stooreee and not Stua he he he). Sture is a sick DJ in my opinion, one of the best Kenyan DJs if you ask me in the US right now. He can do a variety of things with Decks that average guys who call themselves DJs don’t and cant do. However Sture is just Sture … no pun intended Sture but you know what I mean. DJ Sture hasn’t done anything exciting in a while, or more importantly he doesn’t have a platform that can continuously challenge him to get out of his comfort zone to be the best he can be. He holds down the East Coast and he is comfortable where he is. Sture is not alone even my own squad people like DJ Prime – people with candid skillz and crazy amount of potential and technique, they just tend to fizzle off and become complacent with who they are and where they are in life…(no pun intended to both these cats, they are both good friends of mine and I probably give them this lecture each month) but its just the reality.

So whenever something like DJ Allan Spinz falls on my lap, honestly I cant help but stay focused on the hunger the eager and the consistency. Allan Guto has been hot on GetMziki’s heels to listen to his mixes and post something, I mean the kid maintains a podcast that is consistently updated every few weeks or so. Visit his Podcast : http://dj-allanspinz.podomatic.com/. But to me I am don’t necessarily think he is the best Kenyan DJ out there, I just think he has the potential to become one of the best. His approach to me has been fair game, aggressive and targeted. He didn’t give up, he kept going back to the drawing board and saying yo what about this mix. But far from that he also just didn’t give a fuck what I personally thought, he kept doing mixes for his online crowd each week and I watched him grow his fan base over time.

All am saying is the kids spirit inspired me and with that I post his mix today. There are other kids on the come up cats like DJ Dyme and DJ Mista Trixx who are bad news – I love how cats like TOD and CodeRed are handing the torch gently to the new talents. Cats like KillBill are already older now and they cant be measured on the same level but still the DJ landscape in the US has changed dynamically over the last 5/6 years I am almost impressed. Either way I think its time we did a DJ awards on GetMziki and put the accolades where they need to be. (One of these fine days).

But for now – enjoy Spinz mix, and Allan I apologize for giving your stuff the cold shoulder over time but your hustle got me inspired too and rest assured GetMziki will try and support your journey as much as you need.

For some reason this mix feels like there is so much growth over the last 4 years since I first got acquainted to Babu and Chris. Many things have happened since then most of which I really cant table here, however one thing seems very apparent from my first article that I wrote about TOD.. TOD has accomplished what they set out to do – Take Over the DJ market as well as the Kenyan entertainment market in the US flat out. It really doesn’t matter what your personal opinion is of the group and the personalities, the fact of the matter is the boys know what they are doing and they do it well.

This year seems to be another fiesta in the making, for any of y’all who frequent ATL I assume you already know what to expect. For anyone who hasnt experienced Atlanta Thanksgiving – here is your opportunity to get a taste of the greater things to come. Although we dont use this site to market and advertise events, it was hard not to mention or post this mix considering how correct its come. Kaydee sets off the set with is classic Genge *Actually one of KayDees finest mixes in a long time, Then Babu kills it with a mad selection of Reggae/Dancehall, by the time Dyme hits up the urban material the mix has already climaxed. Its hard to admit this next fact but real talk the Chris mix (focus) kills me on this one part that’s just the build of the entire mix. The whole Stomp track performed over the remix STOMPU was sick – it was unexpected, unprecedented and well.. just hard to admit it was sick! This mix reminded me of why I miss DJ Mista Prime so much – that element of the unexpected.

Anyway not to sound like am overtly excited – its just rare for me to listen to a mix that gets me up in arms so to TOD crew thanks for ushering in your debut on GetMziki with something worthy.

Cheers. – Enjoy the mix
