K-Nel Feat Bamboo- Obama Swagger

After the victory by Obama last year and the song “Swagger Like Us” by T.I driving the streets crazy at that time, I thought of a way of flipping the script to reflect that historic win. I immediately thought of the basic idea , ran it through a couple of artists, and the ones that came through first were K-Nel and Bamboo. They jumped in the studio to give their take on the 2008 elections “swagger” year and the result is a winner. Immediately the “Obama Swagger” song premiered on Homeboyz radio, the calls and comments coming from various sources was that the song had held it’s own weight as compared to the original version. This is one of those street songs that capture your everyday life and meant for everyone since we all got some type of “swagger” in us. Also, Bamboo is in talks to sign to K-Nels Stars limit roster. Enjoy the track!!!!!!!

Mangwair Feat Chidi Benz- Speed I20(Get Mziki Exclusive)

Albert Mangwair aka Mangwea, Mangwair, Ngwea or Ngwair has been featured on Getmziki before (Click here), so I will just go straight to the songs “Speed 1-20 and “Nipe Deal” / “Nipe Dili”. I’m sure all my Bongo fans will be happy with this post.
I had started writing the post for the “Nipe Deal” song when my Tanzanian contacts emailed me the “Speed 120″ song which I have been trying to find a good copy for a few weeks now. The song is currently a street anthem in TZ and slowly bubbling to the charts. On “Speed 120″, he enlists the help of Chidi Benz (One of my favourite artists In TZ right now ) for a perfect blend and collabo. “Nipe deal” is a song that has been bubbling on the underground for a minute and its now spreading like world fire. Mangwair just recently wrapped up shooting the videos for the songs, which should take the songs to higher heights. I know I will be adding “speed 120″ on my serato and rocking it at my shows.
Enjoy the tracks!!!!!!!

DJ Week – DJ Wesley : Dallas Promo Mixtape
DJ Wesley is slated to be in the US at some point this year starting his tour in Dallas – the details are still vague at this point as plans are still being made, but from the mixes being submitted each week between Wesley and his team in Dallas its safe to say Memorial Weekend might be an interesting event this year.
Wesley currently holds down Homeboyz Radio – and if you pay close attention to his sets you will realize the kid is bad news – I once told my boy DJ Mista Prime to watch out for DJ Wesley or DJ Creme – Prime took my latter advice and signed up with DJ Creme de la Creme the “top Chef” who I hear kills it on the Decks in Kenya.
Needless to say this new breed of young gunnas is something to watch closely because they are changing the game slowly. I just wish they would dare to step out of the Genge realm for a day or two. This mix is interesting because its not really about Genge or Kapuka… Wesley put a little bit of everything in it.

DJ Dyme – Dymetime Radio (East African Mix)

I’ve never heard DJ Dyme play live nor have I ever had the opportunity to listen to any of his mixes but the funny thing is that this cat has more face value than any other DJ right now. He is always on some flyer somewhere or some website and or an event. (Thats some good marketing and branding by the way Dyme – when an individual has more face value than recognition value – in this industry that goes a long way).
So when he submitted this mixtape I was like wow finally I’ll get to sample some of Dymes work, I actually was keen to say the least to post this mix and also to listen to some of the blends he might have. Truthfully the tracklist is standardized its the same shit you will get from all the other 30 Mixtapes we get submitted on GetMziki, however the one thing that made me post this mixtape is that LAST SONG ON the mix…. SHIT.. that song is FIRE (Dyme send me that song).
K-Teezy and Politiq F&*K you guys murdered that Auto Tune and the beat is so fresh – I cant lie, F&*k it – that ngoma is on FIRE…. I admire how you guys have a DJ that pushes your music, you have established a good network of people, entertainers, producers and aggregators that supports the whole engine. I salute the efforts – the Kenyan American thing is coming whether guys like it or not… Dyme that was a good look… That song makes me think anyone can do what Lil Wayne does…

New DJ Set: DJ Mista Trixx – Lokal Motives Vol III
I have a general bias for these Madness Crew guys, I am not sure why but I keep saying over and over – the Kenyan US market better watchout for these young cats coz I think they are going to be the next big thing. I am particularly intrigued by DJ Mista Trixx, I have worked with many DJs in my time and normally i can pick a few peculiar things about a DJ from their humble beginnings. I think Mista Trixx is onto something if he continues to remain relevant and consistent.
I don’t really like their website, it doesn’t say much about what their outfit does or their capabilities but for more info please check them out here – http://www.madnesscrew.com/home.html. What Trixx does is he compiles some of the great songs on GetMziki sometimes and makes a youthful blend of Genge vs Bongo – this set was submitted a few weeks back but I had to listen to it for days to see if its worthy… ha ha ha And why lie its a good mix to have for short trips to the 711 while listening to jamzs on your ipod.
ps. Message to all DJs, music is changing, music has been changing for the last few years, production tools are growing at a rapid rate – in the US currently anyone can put the acronym D.J in front of their name and automatically they feel they are entitled to throw parties and or play for a large crowd. The market is getting saturated and the quality of work has diminished for years. This Kenyan US industry is going to be dominated by a very small group of young, energetic and very versatile DJs, however many of these young guys are not good businessmen so the balance to find good entertainment and good services or ideas is going to continue being a challenge. The lack of originality will plague the market until such a point that the old and the new work together to make something unique… What am saying is that there is a lot of room for change and growth in this music industry in the US.
But for now just enjoy the NGOMA…

Matonya Feat Fid Q – Taxi Bubu
Since all the Bongo fans have been hitting me up for some bongo music on Getmziki, I will be posting a couple of bongo hit songs in the next few weeks that will not be all that new (In my books) but still rock in the clubs and on radio.
The first one is by Matonya Feat Fid Q called “Taxi Bubu” that has been a banger now for a while in East Africa. The video was shot in Mombasa, Kenya. Matonya’s recent hits include the songs “Vailet” (Violet) and the dance floor filler “Anita”. On this collabo he enlists the help of bongo MC FID Q for a great collabo.
Matonya means trouble. He names himself Matonya in honour of a famous beggar in Dar Es Salaam who was repatriated to Dodoma. This was because of the trials and struggles he went through to make it as a musician in Tanzania. Matonya’s first album (Uaminifu) was in 2003 but it was his sophomore effort that really made him of Tanzania’s top artistes. Watch the video below too

Kotazo – Papy Mbavu
Kotazo is a new dance craze thats been sweeping the DRC. It somewhat a combination of coupe de cale , kuduro and has some elements of capoeria . You have to check out the video. i have also attached the track the the quality is not the best . If you like it and want better quality hit me up while i look around for more pristine sources.
DJ Slim – Club Boomerang Mix
Whenever you put Janet Jackson (escapade), don’t you want my love and some Robin S… I always feel that you are older than you claim to be or seem to be. DJ Slim is one of the BAY AREA’s finest Kenyan DJ’s, as much as I think Slim is a better urban and Genge DJ (there are other Old School veterans in the Bay like DJ Mpenzi – who play Ashford and Simpson, and Dennis Richards you’d be surprised, you can think Bruice Odhiambo is back to DJying he he he). Slim still steps up to the challenge and will do something that will prove me wrong.
This month has been the month of Old Skool mixes, so many DJs have submitted Old skool Mixes, but so far non has come close to reminding me of Boomerang (or better known as Club Ainsworth – Club Aint Worth it for anyone born before 74 he he he, honestly if you went to Boomerang when it was Club Ainsworth its time for you to stop henging). This mix reminds me of Boomerang and Visionz. I cant lie… There are those classic songs that just sit well in your heart.
The mix is a must have the only problem I have with it is that TIMBALAND and KERI HILSON Blend with Fatman scoop. It has no business on this mix
am just saying… I am not sure what the objective was (ama ngoma iliisha kabla DJ astuke???) And the Eminem guess whose back!!! Those two songs have no business on this mix. And you put this right before Ya Kid Kay… DAMN that killed the mix for me or rather a tight mix, such an anti climax… None the less a must have mix for anyone looking for some good beats and some good old memories.
None the less Slim is one of my good friends – always look forward to a Slim party any day… //

The HEAT is on – DJ Mista Dru // Thanksgiving Promo Mix

image courtesy of Straight Up Show – KTN Kenya
Traditionally for many Kenyans living in the US, Atlanta has always been that one place that they re-treat to when they need to catch up with old friends and family. This year is not any different, as part of the on going tradition, the event organizers will always bring DJs and artists from East Africa to usher in the events as approximately 5,000 Kenyans gather in this small town to celebrate Thanksgiving festivities (which is on Thursday 27th – but the parties are the whole weekend)
This year GetMziki worked closely with 2Kat Entertainment to put together a package that we felt would be different, would be interesting, competitive, and for most part TIGHT. Although we don’t use this website to push “events as such”, we try as much as we can to stay neutral (as you’ll notice a lot of other DJ mixes being published and pushed here – KMadness, DJ KillBill, DJ Slim).
However DJ Dru who has flown from Kenya and has been touring, is currently in Seattle this weekend. Dru who will be at the Truly 2Kat Thanksgiving Extravaganza has been working on DJ mixes from his hotel room just to feed the people. So we decided not to hold onto these sets any longer and we will share them… for more information visit: www.trulythanksgiving.com

DJ Kill Bill – Kills Soul Officially [ The Official Soul/Old Skoo Mixtape ]
I am kinda posting this in a hurry and in between so many things, but for the first time this week or this month I must admit ive listened to a DJ Mix and been impressed. I know Billy from my Mtaa back in Embakassi, so you can imagine my shock when I landed in the US and found out that he had built a small movement by himself and actually killing it in the DJ scene.
Kill Bill who currently is working under the CodeRed USA brand – is probably one of the few DJs in the US I would keep a keen eye on. I’ve listened to a lot of his other material which I am yet to post but by far this mix really got me. It moved me. Actually F*&K it, this is a tight ass mix, not necessarily in terms of DJ mixing and blends – he didn’t even have to blend any of this songs. THE SONG SELECTION is ridiculous sick – Billy you killed it on this mix playa.
I had to share this with the world, I’ve been jamming to it for about 3 days now and I cant seem to forward or change to a different set. My Advice to all the OJ DJ’s – there is a new breed of young’s who have been studying your style and are not just taking over one by one… enjoy the mix…
Thanks Billy – for more info visit DJ Kill Bill here – www.djkillbill.com

Madness Crew Presents Reggae Exclusives Mix
Many times DJ’s send me mixes to critic and to sample or make recommendations. My immediate opinion is always based on how many times the DJ name dropped his brand, how many dub plates (how many samples you have of other artists praising you) you have on your set, and very rarely would I comment on the types of songs a DJ has on his mixes.
However very few DJ’s move me, I have a list I would be willing to share at will… Am sure many people would want to know who is on the top of that list ha ha ha… // Let me put your curiosity to rest – my number one DJ right now is DJ Fuze (GetMziki Mixtape DJ and also Bay Areas finest) followed by DJ Mista Prime (also known as DJ Slikk for all those SWAT remembering cats and currently the producer of Xtreem Music Video) and then lastly DJ Edu (Destination Africa – DNA BBC 1extra).
But when Patrick sent me this mix, I was compelled to listen to the song selection, and I must say its probably one of the most impressive Reggae mixes I’ve listened to. There is a difference however from reggae dancehall and reggae lovers rock, not withstanding stuff like calypso which can add to the complexities of this rather broad genre. This mix falls in between a lovers rock and some calypso – where the BPM’s are at an average low. Once you throw Capleton – small world as the first track on your mix, am doomed.. and then lace it up with some Daville – Always on my mind.. Am kwisha.
Big ups to everyone at the Madness Crew – and Dj Mista Trix
// Enjoy the mix //

Before FM Radio
Before FM radio came to Kenya,- when the only choices in radio were VOK /KBC national service, general service and vernacular. If you had a Sanyo or regular radio your musical choices were pretty limited to the choices of government dj’s on radio. Those who were slightly well off maybe had a Grundig radio which could catch BBC, and other foreign stations.
For those of us who were up on things, you made sure you had a source of those ‘radio station’ tapes that used to circulate in the estates. I managed to dig up some selections from dj’s who were popular like Tim Westwood from UK who had the HipHop tapes on lock, then we had David Rodigan from UK – kiss fm, also there was Cut killer from France on some HipHop tapes. There were also tapes from WPGC 95 from DC and couple of tapes form Kiss FM: in NY.
For old times sake enjoy:

Dj Dona just completed the part 8 of this killer mixtape series. The Cover art should be updated soon but i thought it should be a must have. Download and bump to this on your way to work, in your house parties, in your cars, but don’t listen to this when making out. Because this … is not making out music. Mad respect to Lyrical Assassins with that Chini chini track – Dona put it on the mix too. And of course Mwana Falsafa Bado nipo nipo…
