Music Excursions

Friday Mellow Grooves: Africando All Stars & Stan

Africando All Stars

Africando is a group that brings together African and Caribbean cultures by allying Senegalese vocals with Cuban salsa tunes. On this track they did something different which just goes to show how easy it would be to blend the African cultures and communities if only we tried harder. They performed this track in Swahili building upon the growing Salsa culture in Kenya (think Pavement club). I thought it was very appropriate to include them in the Music excursions journey…

Brand New: Shavie & Slice – GAL

One day when REDSAN was sleeping he dreamt that some crew would come up and run up on his spot. One fine day when REDSAN was sleeping he had a bad nightmare that some young cats from the hood would be the kings of Kenyan Dancehall from no where…

One Day – ULOPA Ngoma created the worst NIGHTMARE EVER for REDSAN and any other artist like Redsan. This nightmare came through the form of Shavie and Slice. Strangely the first time I heard this song I was like damn them Jamaicans just wont stop with their Dancehall. But the ULOPA ngoma signature drop before all tracks was too strategic I almost felt that some DJ was playing tricks with the track. Granted that this track is kinda old to a few DJs in the US – to me and a few other people its fairly new. I also have a pet peeve for Kenyan artists who try to rap and sing in patois (or pigeon english)… but why lie this song is on FIRE… Truthfully if you can do it and hack it then sawa go ahead I dont think I can complain, my only challenge to this duo is consistency, lets see if they can churn our hits after hits with the same feel tempo and charismatic patois enabled songs.

There isn’t much to say about these guys because they are still on the come up, so forget about myspace or getting an image from them or of them. But I hope some of my connections will get us some info.. Ama ULOPA – Do the needful and sambaza some more information about this track (KILLER TRACK) and the artists.

Enjoy.. this is feel good music.. Ohhh Redsan uta du whaarr (nipigie simu kwanza mbuyu)…

Yéké Yéké’ was re-recorded in a shorter version (faster, electric and more conducive to dancing) for the album Akwaba Beach in 1987. The song’s dazzling success took everyone by surprise. The sales soared to more than a million singles and half a million albums and its listing on the hit parades around the world multiplied. When ‘Yéké Yéké’ reached the top spot on the Pan-European charts in Billboard magazine (USA) in 1988, the griot from Kissidougou had succeeded in giving African music the place it rightfully deserves (more..)

Salif Keita (born August 25, 1949) is an internationally recognized afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. He is unique not only because of his reputation as the Golden Voice of Africa, but because he is an albino and a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. This royal heritage meant that he should never have become a singer, which was deemed to be a griot’s role. (more ..)

Just A Band is a Kenyan house/funk/disco band whose career was launched with their debut album, Scratch To Reveal, in 2008. Their music has explored various musical directions such as, but not limited to jazz, hip-hop, disco and electronica.

The band are also notable for their DIY aesthetic. In addition to writing, recording and engineering their music, the band creates their own music videos, packaging and promotional items and establishing a strong web and blog presence, referencing elements from virtual band like Gorillaz and incorporating anime and animation, illustration and photography in their visual campaigns. The second born of twelve children to Nigerian émigrés in London, Siji spent much of his early childhood in Lagos and London before coming to the US to further pursue his musical ambitions. His own cultural heritage combined with the political and social movements of the age, exposed young Siji to the insurgent, politicized music of the Afrobeat legends Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen as well as the soulful grooves of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Otis Redding. His parents, in particular, his father, loved music, but like most children of hardworking immigrants, Siji was urged by them to pursue a career in the professional fields of medicine or law. But the lure of the music was too strong. In the nineties, when London was bursting at the seams with new music and groups like Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, and D-Influence dominated the scene, Siji’s attention was captured and he began to follow his passion for making and recording his own music. Liz Ogumbo: Maro Paro More

Liz

I know Liz from her days in LA, back in the day she recorded a dub plate for dj Lenoir in my garage though i cant seem to track it down. – It would have been interesting to compare the growth. Apart from singing Liz is a model , designer and  businesswoman  who runs a successful model agency – Imani models

Maro Paro More is a big tune,  not a club banger but still a big tune more like 21st century Ohangla, a must have on your ipod playlist.  The track is also available on Just a band’sScratch to Reveal album. This Track has remix written all over it. I’m waiting to see if the djs on this list are real dj’s or just human mp3 players.

Dead Prez feat Kshaka, Ukoo Fulani – Red Black & Green (Ni Wakati Soundtrack Exclusive)

There has been an burgeoning hiphop movement in East Africa for many years, to document the history here wouldn’t do justice to the work that many East African creative minds have tried to do over time. However one person always comes to mind when it comes to connecting East Africa (or more importantly Kenyan hiphop) with the Western world. Michael Wanguhu has been on a quest to advocate for all Kenyan artists, all Kenyan producers and all Kenyan entertainers in ways they will never come to appreciate until a few decades from today.

It saddens me further when I look at the tourism efforts that the Kenyan Government exerts on these hocus pocus conferences and meaningless newspaper Ads and page inserts on US/UK magazines to reach out to the Western communities. While all along you have soldiers and advocates for your country, busy trying to preach Kenya to the masses in ways you would never imagine. How much would it cost to support Kenyan producers, artists, directors, ambassadors for change – people who wake up and sleep about Kenya. The Michael Wanguhu’s the Wanuri Kahius, the Kimathis (Jamhuri Wear), the Wangeci’s (Kipepeo), the Uhuru Clothings (Tom). All these people are silent merchants of a country that’s wanting to tell people about its story its beauty, its journey, its changes, its growth.

So when I see people like Mike doing more work around the East African community, I am always compelled to pay attention. Because people like Mike tell tales of Africa that don’t have to do with poverty and struggling. They talk about the Africa I know, which has nothing to do with Maasai’s or AIDS (as much as these are realities) they don’t affect me directly. I grew up in an estate with water, with tarmac, with food, with decent friends and different set of dynamics. To me the artists who paint this picture are the kinds of artists I am normally drawn to, and I think thats why the whole urban scene has taken off in Africa. You have people P-Square talking about feel good music…

Michael Wanguhu has one documentary under his belt – hiphop colony for those who slept on it. He is currently working on Ni Wakati Movement – which by FAR – from my perspective is going to be one of his best work for years to come. Without giving too much away – please check out the website and listen to the track that he has sambazad for the public. This the official sound track of the new documentary.

Seun Kuti & Fela’s Eqypt 80

Seun Kuti, Fela Kuti’s son and Femi Kuti’s younger sibling is an incredible artiste in hes own right. Unlike hes brother who has a separate sound from his father, Seun takes very much afters his father – maintaining the same band -Egypt 80 in addition to the carbon copy resemblance.

Seun released his first album some of the highlight tracks include “many things” which sounds like “coffin for head of state” part II.

Makio – Trippin (GetMziki Exclusive **)

image courtesy of Surefire Music group

We sometimes would like to pride ourselves in being able to break music and break new artists, however the saddest thing is that we probably have been constant with breaking new music as opposed to breaking new artists.

Although over the next few days we will do a 2008 Artist Wrap up to showcase some of the new artists we discovered in the US, and some of the not so new artists we discovered in Kenya/Uganda and Tanzania.

Attached is an exclusive track from a Kenyan born US superstar and phenomenon called Makio, the track is called trippin. Makio’s management had sent this to us a while back and we tried pushing it in Kenya through various channels and even submitted it to Kora Awards at the time. Thanks to some of our people at Phat Africa (Mike Strano asante sana!) who opened a few doors here and there and we were able to get some interesting feedback. Needless to say this is a brand you probably wouldn’t hear often but we felt it important to close the year by sharing his music and letting some of the ladies ogle on this Kenyan breed thriving in Baltimore, MD.

Some of the more TV savvy people based in the US may have seen him audition and participate in Making the Band IV but we think the bigger accomplishment here is actually pursuing the music after Making the Band and not necessarily making it to Making the Band…

That said since then, Makio has worked with people like Serius Jones (DTP), Q Parker (from 112), Tony Sunshine (Terro Squad) amongst others and we think if he keeps this up then we definately will be seeing him on some MTV2 shit or BET 106 and Park (well its no longer running but an equivalent show). To us Makio is a well packaged brand image-wise and also product-wise, he has the voice, the swagger and the talent to become the next superstar. We will give you all the support we can through our network – Cheers Makio and Team

2008 Wrap Up: DJ of the year DJ Edu (BBC 1Xtra DNA)

Often we get asked who we think the best African/Kenyan DJ in the US/UK is. While this is a flattering position and opinion to be requested of us, its not as simple to come up with one individual who is talented, versatile, skilled and well known. There are so many things that go into defining a great DJ vs just a good or a talented DJ.

2008 has been a phenomenal year for many individuals in the US, many people put the title DJ in front of their names and conveniently called themselves DJs. Some individuals teamed up and formed DJ units which in our opinion is a lost cause in this market place, and some individuals chose to travel from Kenya to promote their skills and technique in the US. Either way you look at it from our perspective consistency is the key – and for several years one person seems to stand out as the undoubted winner and DJ of the year. Though we do not showcase a lot of his work here (mainly because he is already well acknowledged and placed in the UK) we listen to his work every week online and constantly appreciate the amount of work put in to each and every mix.

DJ Edu, a homeboyz veteran has been on the music scene for quite a long time, but there is something about Edu that many Kenyan DJs dont seem to get. Edu has figured out a way to corner and master the African market as a whole. Edu doesn’t only play Genge, soul and urban… Edu plays Coupe De Cale, Zouk, Lingala, Soukous, Nigerian hits, Egyptian hits, tonnes of Afro beats. Edu has essentially changed how a lot of people consume African Music in the US and UK. BBC 1xtra is only available online and through DAB in the UK, but you can imagine the number of simultenous sessions per week trying to get a listen off his latest work.

It doesn’t mean that there aren’t any other DJs in the US who advocate and put African music out there, it just means this is one individual that we feel in our opinion has the winning formula year after year. I mean this is one person who in my humble opinion listens to every song he puts on his mixes and then figures out how to create relationships between these songs and other western songs.

We have attached one of his latest shows to close the year 18th Dec 2008 – please pay close attention to the mashups and blends especially the DNA mixes and the Kwaku Mixes… DJ Edu takes the 2008 award for African DJ of the year as far as GetMziki is concerned.

Brand New: Sauti Sol – Lazizi (GetMziki Exclusive***)

img courtesy of Sauti Sol – Penya Records

The multi-talented Sauti Sol is nothing you have ever experienced before. The African acoustic band consists of 4 members; Bien-Aime Baraza, Willis Chimano, Delvin Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno who met in high school and originally started as an accapella group. Their album is a fusion of African sound with an urban feel; most of the songs apparently have been well received when performed live among Sauti’s continuously growing fan-base.

When I received the Sauti Sol CD, the packaging and the production was up to par with what I expected. But what I didn’t expect was the actual sound coming from the group. This is purely a musical experience. I want everyone to experience what I did, and I will debut bits and pieces of this album over the next few months but for today please listen to this journey – because I think Kenya is onto something and the whole Penya crew is coming up with some interesting music from the region.

Wawesh I salute you continue and keep up with the good work…

2008 Music Wrap-up: Coupe Decale

Its the end of the year and everyone is making lists. . Coupe Decale was huge this year (or most slept on depending on where you are) even though its been around since like 02′ and might not be around in 09′ .

Coupe Decale stole the thunder from congolese rumba by taking the part of Congolese rumba that most people listen to adding some swagger to it and creating a whole new musical genre. Here is the list of Coupe Decale tracks we been bumping all year

if you missed the usher – Coupe Decale remix here it is again:

dj mujava – township funk

Even though Kwaito is not getting as much play as it was a couple of years ago and house music seems to be dominant in South Africa a couple of tracks from South Africa still manage to come through and catch peoples attention. Township funk is infectious in a way that i cant explain. This is the most remixed African song of the year.

more on DJ mujava here
and the Video is here

Elvis Maswanganyi aged 24 well know as DJ Mujava hails from Pretoria in a township called Attridgeville. He was raised in a family of 7, father, two sisters and two brothers. From all the family members he was the only one who had love for music as he used to be a dancer and he spent his spare time practicing with a small keyboard that he had at home. He was inspired by the likes of DJ Fresh, DJ Oskido ,Masters At Work, Revolution, Loop Masters, etc.

Unlike other producers who had a chance to go to school to study music, DJ Mujava had to learn the hard way, by striving very hard to get a way of knowing how to programme music. His brother sacrificed not to throw himself a party and decided to buy Mujava a computer so he could learn and master his production skills..

Pretoria based community stations played a huge role in honing and familiarizing DJ Mujava’s music to the masses. Within no time Mujava had become a household name in his neighborhood. Taxis and taverners were flocking to DJ Mujava’s house requesting that he gives them the music he was producing. Without any strains and hassles, Mujava would give these people his material as everybody was excited about this. His production became the talk of town and taxi’s started punting his tracks in a big way. This was now becoming a trend that every taxi has to play a DJ Mujava CD. Through all of this, he managed to learn the trade as he was becoming more exposed to the music industry. A recording deal was in the cards, however Mujava wanted to learn the business side of this industry.

Mujava as he was affectionately known in his High School days, met up with Cry, a Gospel producer who had an independent company called CSP. Cry suggested to Mujava that they should try a house project. The two (DJ Mujava & Cry) then started a company called House Therapy Productions.

He then worked with different artist within House Therapy Productions, producing music for the likes of Bujo Mujo, Casablanca(DJ Floit), DJ Cee, Getto Skwatt (Hip Group), Simon Makhatholele(Gospel), Tsala & Spoko and their songs were the most popular tracks in the year 2004 as BOP featured one of their songs on their album Skororo(BOP Killer “Naja”). Besides producing music for other artists he has five albums that he released under his name DJ Mujava titled, House Assignment 1 & 2, Bass & Drums 1 & 2, DJ Mujava presents Getto Skwatt, House Rawkers.and lastly DJ’s by Nature.

After establishing himself in the market, he then decided to spread his wings further by joining his production (Mujava’s Music Production & Entaertainment) with Sheer House, as they are the masters of dance music to date especially House Music, and now they bring you DJ Mujava’s latest works called DJ Mujava “Pretoria’s Exclusive V1″.

Fally Ipupa. Mabele

Fally , is one of the new crop of  ‘Rumba Congolaise’ artistes along with Ferre Gola who are attempting to snatch the mantle from the established artistes like Koffi Olomide, JB Mpiana, and Werrason. The thing about Congolese music is that it functions like a school. Take Fally for instance, Fally was a member of Koffi’s Quartier Latin, Koffi before him was a member of Papa Wemba’s Viva la Musica. Papa Wemba himself was a member of Zaiko Langa Langa so there is definitely some kind of artistic education system.

Fally Ipupa

As for Fally, he definitely has a HipHop swagger but manages to remain rooted in Congolese rumba. the track Mabele is a modern throwback.

Following is the video:

Kaysha

Singer and producer Kaysha is perhaps one of the most popular artists in Africa and from Africa, with a fan base that extends from the continent to the diaspora in Europe,South America, and the Caribbean.
Of course being mutilingual helps alot. Kaysha has songs in English,Spanish,French Portuguese and Lingala. Not to mention cross genre songs in Coupe de cale, Zouk,Kizomba and attempts at R and B and HipHop. Kaysha is superstar.

Here are some tracks from previous albums though you can previesw the new album forever young at

Defining Kenyan Urban Soul – //

image courtesy of Didge – Facebook

A few years ago marketers and record labels came up with the term Neo-soul to define What they called Nu-soul which was a sub genre for contemporary urban r&b music. The Music was a hybrid for the 70′s influenced soul music fused with the current jazz, latin, African, hiphop, house and sometimes funk music. With time this genre phased out as the artists denounced its ownership and often didn’t want to be classified as Neo Soul artists because it restricted their growth or their breadth of music.

Often we would listen to people like Fantasia and classify them as Neo Soul, while all along she considers herself an R&B singer. So came with the fall the death of Neo Soul as we knew it then…(Am not saying the music is dead but the terms of definition have changed over the years). Today we are faced with a similar dilemma as marketers as entertainment proffessionals and as music enthusiast. We are struggling to classify the new sound coming from Africa as a whole and the sub genre coming from Kenya in particular. At GetMziki we have been having a constant dialog about where to bucket these new sounds we have been collecting and its increasingly becoming a daunting task. We therefore have decided to open up the forum to our user base and hopefully something will strike a cord.

Some Kenyan artists classify their music as Afro-fusion, some classify their new sound as Afro-Soul, personally I have always called this new sound Kenyan Urban Soul. Some call it Urban Benga – or Kapuka Soul… The truth of the matter is we have to come up with one word or one term that will stick and provide the benchmark for Kenyan Urban Soul music. It gets more complicated when you compare these sounds with other similar sounds within the region… (I have attached a TID and Wyre ballad that will throw you off completely). That said – please listen to the following songs, these are the new sounds of AFRICA, this is AFRICA/ Kenya reinventing itself to compete and collaborate in the on going onslaught for the Global R&B Market. I personally love and adore these types of music, because they demonstrate the vocal capabilities of our artists, they stretch the music and the instruments to the core – the allow our language to be heard in different ways… So to me I call this – Kenyan urban Soul – KUS Music ha ha ha … // please help us define what this sound is.. What do you think this should be?

K Naan on Cypher Sounds

If there is one person we salute on this site more than any other US/African artist it has to be K Naan, although we haven’t managed to share a lot of his music here (Mainly due to record label issues and distribution restrictions). I thought it was important to share this video with some of the Kenyan users accessing the site from the 254.

This video clip is from the Cypher Sounds – these were intermission sets that acted like fillers for the BET hiphop awards a few months ago. But I think its just big for K Naan to be amongst some of this big heavy weights. And to deliver that freestyle (“My Nigerian thugs will call you suuzeeeee”)… it was sick…

Somali Stand UP!!! This is your KING!

Kotazo – Papy Mbavu

Kotazo is a new dance craze thats been sweeping the DRC. It somewhat a combination of coupe de cale , kuduro and has some elements of capoeria . You have to check out the video. i have also attached the track the the quality is not the best . If you like it and want better quality hit me up while i look around for more pristine sources.

Interlude: Daudi Kabaka feat Chiwawa – Bachelor Boy

As I was cleaning out my gmail inbox I discovered that there is so much music hiding in my email account (thanks to Xoopit.com) I am able to sieve through so much data and find out whats important and whats not. (believe it or not I have malizad my gmail space and quota).

That said in 2006 one of my Blackstar soldiers Edu Gee (he does most of the video and production work for Blackstar – Blackstar Films) produced this track which was a remix of Daudu Kabakas Bachelor Boy and a blend of a hook that chiwawa made. I personally never liked Chiwawa, he rubbed me the wrong way one day – toka siku hiyo hatuja wahi patana, laini Chiwawa is a real Chiwawa… he he he it doesn’t matter what I think about him personally, the boy can spit rhymes every once in a while.

They did this clip one day in the studio, I thought it would be fun to share it – I still cant believe Daudi had a track called Bachelor Boy..

ps. Edu Gee is not a producer so dont critic this based on sound/music production, I think he did this more for fun than publicity. I hope he doesn’t spark coz I shared it.
