Naija Music

E-Gnyte feat Jay Martins – This Kind Party ft. J.Martins (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

I love this Naija music (insert insanely jango sound ~ yawa ~) our Nigerian connects is awake now and responding so expect a lot more Naija tunes moving forward. This track by E-Gnyte (pronounced Ignite) featuring seasoned musician J-Martins who we’ve featured here over and over again is a sure shot collabo. Although I hear them mention De Cale Coupe dance! through out the track I find it hard to trace this sound with Coupe De Cale.

Eko Beats produced this banger and they have their strong outfit called Eko Beats Records which seems to have a line of stars slated for the Winter release 2010. We will keep a keen eye on this stable, but for now enjoy this banger. This kind of party!! I love the video too.

Naeto C feat Ikechukwu – Kini Big Deal

Its obvious its been busy here – we’ve been trying to push out a new blog look and theme which is still unfinished. Please feel free to give us your comments and constructive criticism if you can. Some things will definitely change and some will stay its the nature of progression.

I think through our my GetMziki Journey one thing has become apparent to me – the Naija music engine is a well oiled mechanism. These cats understand the business and they know how to put shit together. The quality of the videos in Naija has improved so much since 4 years ago its amazing each time I watch a Naija video I start comparing that with any work that is coming out of Kenya and East Africa today. This is not to say that East Africa is not putting out any real good material – all I am saying is sheer volume of relevance in Naija is overwhelming in comparison to East Africa (yes I said it all 3 countries).

I am particularly moved and inspired by folks over at 360 Storm Records (Entertainment). It doesn’t take a genius to figure out this is a movement that comes with marketing geniuses, creative folks and to top it off they have a roaster of artists they serve that they look after so well. I don’t even know the cats but I want to meet them soon – I know that much.

I have been an avid follower of Naeto C and it took DJ Edu to revive my taste buds. (Thats why I like that DJ Edu – DNA show – you never know what to expect). Sadly I enjoy a lot of his older shows – so I am always playing catch up to his exclusives. As it is this is a track that was played or debuted sometimes last year but I still feel as though its relevant because its not hit the US streets HAAARD.

Anyway the quality of this track may not be all that but I still thought it was relevant… KINI BIG DEAL. I understand it won some MTV awards in Africa…

Bracket Feat 2Face- Yori Yori Remix (GetMziki Exclusive)

I have been MIA for a while now taking care of some business, but we are back now. Thanks to Leo, Alvin and Louis for taking care of all the updates.

I got this track like 3 weeks ago and although we showcased it on the “Homepage“, many people go directly to the blog and most likely might have missed the song.

I showcased the original Bracket “Yori Yori” way before it became a hit and people everywhere have been going wild when this song comes on. I’m really glad they came out with the remix which features Naija heavyweight 2face who did a couple of tour spots in the US a few months ago, since although the original is a banger, after so many spins and after every other Dj playing this track 2-3 times a night, the song has really been “overplayed”. This remix has been out for like 3 weeks now and its already on the charts in major Naija radio stations.

My sources tell me that Bracket is actually gearing up for the release of thier second album and the ” Yori Yori” remix is the first single off the album. This song was produced and recorded at Giant Beats Studios, Abuja by hit producer Dekumzy. The remix is a different song altogether and features a new beat plus 2Face on the track. I wanna see if djs jump on this track just like they did the other one.

Enjoy!!!!!

Justina- Radio DJ (GetMziki Exclusive)

We have featured Justina from Naija in the site before with the club banger “Omo Too Sexy“. The song enjoyed massive airplay and rotation both locally and abroad during its drop and remains people’s  favourite as a heavy club banger even till this date.

With her astonishingly powerful and variable voice, Justina combines different elements from Jazz, R&B, Soul, Hip Hop and Afrobeat to her very own style. In her songs which she composes largely herself she evokes her relentless love for life but also touches on pressing social issues such as poverty, corruption, struggling kids and the treatment of women in Africa.

On this track she talks about her love for a radio dj. The question is which one ????

I’m really feeling this track and I wanna know what people out there think.

Dr Sid – Something About You

Mo Hit records is a record company/label comprised of D’Banj, Wande Coal, Don Jazzy, Dr Sid, Kay Switch and Da prince that is owned by Don Jazzy. You can call it the “Interscope” of Naija music.Out of the stable is the rising superstar Dr Sid. The doctor part is just not a stage name but he’s a real dental surgeon. Talk about music passion!!!!

SID was born Sidney Onoriode Esiri on the 1st of May 1980, into an entertainment family. His mother was a successful fashion designer and his father was the legendary actor Justus Esiri famous for his role as the Village Headmaster.

He has been quietly bubbling on the charts and on this record he shows us why he’s the the next one to blow up on the Mo hits record stable. The kid got some heat including this track with D’Banji ‘Pop Something” that is also fire!!!. On a side note most of us have been listening to “Don Jazzy” beats but never really knew who produced the records. He’s a genuis when it comes to the boards. Just listen to D’ Banji’s ”fall in love” on the intro section.

Enjoy!!!

Maye Hunta – Ekaette (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

This has to be the most evasive track I have ever had to post. Honestly I have had this track for months but I was unimpressed with the quality of the file I have (sadly its the version I have posted today). But we kept asking our Naija connects to hook up a better version all with no success. We even tried hitting up Maye Hunta’s peeps down in SA but still nothing got back to us. At this point we decided this is a big tune to let lose, its been out for a while but we just cant keep holding it hostage anymore.

Olumayowa Adekunle Odejimi aka Mayé Hunta is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, record producer and actor. Maye who is currently based in Jo’berg South Africa has been singing for a while but got into the commercial scene around 1998. Part of his acting career can also be seen on M-Net series called “Jacobs Cross.” However we fell in love with this track last year when it dropped because it reminded us of what most guys growing up in Africa experienced.

You see the reality of the storyline on this track is so real that its almost impossible to ignore the entertainment factor. Most of us guys know a guy or a man of a household who was tapping the housegirl. Most guys who grew up in Africa probably lost their virginity to some house girl (lol). And thats just me being real with you guys, so there is the sheer entertainment of the track and awesome high quality video. Then there is the reality on the ground that guys really fyeka their housies… Am just saying! Anyway let me kill this vibe before I get into trouble.

Enjoy the track..

Bigiano – Shayo [Sax Version] (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

If Hellon wasnt so busy with his nonsense with Esther I think this is some of the interesting creative work that the genius sax player would put his mouth into. I mean really, how crazy is crazy when crazy goes insane!! I cant believe i used to enjoy the Jazz sessions at Pavement with him and Aaron back in the day. Anyway not to be opinionated – because really I don’t care about that whole situation. I’ve actually sat on the back bench watching the drama unfold and deep down catch myself thinking this is a good thing for Kenya – yet again some random news thats taking Kenyans mind off the state of politics and poor Governance. (Am sorry sometimes i get political when I watch NTV news and half the coverage is about useless ministers talking about nonsensical issues in parliament – honestly its sometimes just saddening – when will Kenya learn, its the same cast different movie.. I mean these guys pass 2 or 3 bills a year if at most during parliament… anyway.. I think in kenya politics is a career move its not something you do because you want to become of service to the people. Its something you do because you want to better your own individual lifestyle.. ) URRRGH….. I digress am sorry. Am sorry. Am sorry sincerely apologize.

Back to Hellon. Actually scratch that no need to waste time talking about Hellon. But lets just say Kenya has Chris Bitok and people like Hellon who can really intertwine and collaborate with the Urban/Pop/Genge/Kapuka folks. I am yet to hear something as interesting as the track I’ve attached. (if there is anything out there please send it through). My man DJ Mighty Mike (Naija) has an entire album called AFROMENTALS which is a rendition of all African Tunes performed by an energetic sax player who just loves making remixes to popular African genre. This is the type of music your mom can listen to and be happy on a Sunday afternoon without the lyrical content.

Ive thrown in some bonus material towards the end of this post also. Enjoy! Arrghh Kenyan politics really makes me angry. But I was once told to be angrier at the people who elect the leaders :-)

SAUTI SOL, GENERAL PYPE & SASHA P – MARA HIO HIO

We’ve slept on this song long enough, I think long enough for Wesh to call me out on this particular post. So now I am feeling bad that i didnt post this track when it was relevant and hot. However this is GetMziki this is not Kenyan/African Media – we have a tendency to do things “kienyeji style” and it works for our audience most of the time. So please be patient with us.

This has to be one of the few most interesting collaborations I have heard in a while. Wawesh produced and inspired so you know the beat is heavy with real instruments and acoustics. I kinda like Wawesh production style lately. I am still trying to bucket his sound but its been hard lately because everything sounds so different. This track has some essence from some old school tracks. I am not crazy about the track but its a feel good joint we felt worth posting. The whole Kenyan Naija collaboration sounds like a winning formula to me.

DJ – Lenoir : International African Mix Vol 1 (GetMziki Exclusive **)

Creative courtesy of GetMziki

If you’ve lived in the Bay Area (Northern California normally just San Francisco/Oakland area) for a while, then you’ve probably heard or seen DJ Lenoir. I really cant say much about Lenoir as a DJ because I moved to Oakland just when he was kind of winding down his DJ career to focus on other businesses he had. However I can talk about being in the Bay about 5 years ago and going to all these Dancehall parties that he sorta had pioneered around the community with another DJ called TOKS. The first time I met Lenoir I told him, dude you need to make these African Mixtapes, no one was taking advantage of the fact that all these Junguz were loving these Congolese, Angolan, Cote Dvoire songs. Lenoir slept on this for over 4 years to come up with this Street attack that I find not only unique but a massive statement to the potential of African music in the local US communities.

One thing most people don’t know is Oakland/San Francisco is probably one of the most diverse cities to live in. Honestly on any Friday or Saturday night you can go to a club called BAOBAB in San Francisco and the club will be packed with Junguz jumping and puffing to Lingala and Coupe de Cale. Anyway not to bore you with how cool my city is, the reality really is that I strongly believe African Urban and alternative music will take the US scene by storm in the not so near future. Its just a matter of time. African artists and African entertainment industry insiders are slowly but surely getting their shit together – and soon you will be going to a DELA concert in NYC, a SAUTI SOL, a KAYSHA concert… It happens in San Francisco and NYC right now more frequently than not.

So When Lenoir came knocking (a native of Congo DRC) I had to open up the door and open it up wide. Mostly because I respect the work he has put into the community in the past with my boy Louis, and also mostly coz I think he understands African sound slightly better than many other DJs I hang out with. This mix is not about the skill and or versatility. A lot of Kenyan DJs compile mixtapes to showcase their DJ-capabilities. I think there comes a point in time where the Mix should be about the music and about the sound or flow. Lenoir could definitely have done with a little less of the the sound effects (too much dancehall DJying can throw you off Len) but overall I think maybe its just a new style – and possibly a new way to get people here to appreciate all these new eclectic sounds.

And for that I designed his CD cover for fun :-) I started with the version on top and ended up with this one here:

DJ Mista Trixx – Dallas Memorial Promo Mixtape (GetMziki Exclusive DJ sessions ***)

Ohh Boy! here we go again Dallas Memorial 2010 (it sucks when you have to start a post with Ohh Boy!) but really honestly, I love Dallas and I love the Dallas Community (actually the highest GetMziki Traffic is from Dallas). But Dallas party promotions are normally a whole different beast, especially during memorial weekend. I had the opportunity of going for the Memorial weekend a few years back and as much as I enjoyed myself there were just too many complications and siasa. There were also other events happening in Houston which I wanted to go to but couldn’t because I was caught up with difficulties in making decisions on where to go. The complexities of the promotions involved to capture the audiences in Dallas are just ridiculous sometimes. Although on the flip side its exciting as a consumer to see people go to great lengths to captivate you or to get your attention. Maybe this is the thing they call FAIR BUSINESS, that I have no idea about.

I think gone are the days when I would honestly believe that one day we will actually have one KENYAN party which was prepared by all the promoters in a particular city. Am not even waiting for that to happen, especially after this years Las Vegas Kenyan Parties. I actually thought that dream may have come true, only to realize that there were about 3 different parties in Las Vegas (so it’s not just Dallas I think the Kenyan events circus is all over the US). It usually sucks when your girlfriend wants to go to a TOD event and you want to go to a 2Kat event and your cousin wants to go to a Mdosi event, and your bro is at a DJXP event… all in one night. But hey what do I know – am just a mere consumer trying to look for the best hang to go to.

This year Dallas has some interesting things going on, which I am not at liberty to talk about. However I love music, so putting my bias aside I am inclined to recognize and pay homage to good music and good DJying. Mista Trixx is well known in the community circles but unfortunately he/they Madness crew have never really toured the West Coast so I can’t talk much about his live performance. What I can say is that he is consistent in sending me mixes every quarter and to that I am grateful. Their crew is on the star line up to the (Uhuru Clothing) UC inspired events coming up in Dallas and as such most of these DJ’s involved are working on Mixes and promotional material right now. Over the next few months (MAY IS SO FAAAAAR but guys are already pushing events), be prepared to see and hear a lot of talent coming from the people involved in putting some of these events together. GetMziki claims no particular affiliation and its important for our users to understand that, however whenever we hear a good mix we will always post it – and this my friends is a damn good mix. (Last year we posted the TOD ThanksGiving (XGV) Mixtape one of my US DJ favorites to date). Anyway for anyone making plans to go to Dallas – Enjoy coz its always guaranteed to be muhenjoyos – Women in Dallas are off the chains. Its the one place I can be myself, people there tend not to pull “petho” I think I talked to some chile for an hour in sheng – it was the best thing ever.

For the few who wont make it – enjoy this DJ mix as a blessing.

ps. I added a cheezy Video Trixx put together LOL.

DJ Mighty Mike – Heavy Something Vol 5 (Naija Exclusives ***)

hs5_DJ_MightyMike
image courtesy of DJ Mighty Mike

One of the few interesting things about me probably has to be my listening habits. I have an array of music that i listen to and that I am exposed to, however over time I tend to lean towards certain people that I just generally like or I am fond of. For instance I was an avid DJ Tim Westwood fan for years, until I discovered Clinton Sparks. I kept it true to Clinton Sparks for years until I discovered some other local Internet stars who just blow my out of my mind with their technique skills and music selection.

The thing with these youngn’s (which I wont share because they are my resource for hot new US hiphop). Its that these cats actually write what they think about the songs, they play them, they mix them, they blend them. What they essentially did for me is they killed the whole Celebrity style music presentation and brought to me the DJ in his bedroom style performance coupled with killer turntablism and a massive selection of hot new music. I resepect anyone who can play a Bad song but blend it so well in between good songs to make it stand out as the GREATER song.

Thats kinda where I put DJ Mighty Mike. I am an avid follower of his blog and music updates, I have learned more about Naija music and artists from Mighty Mike than I have from any other Naija DJ or blogger. I mean Mighty informs me by proxy more than our own GetMziki Naija connex thats just how much respect I have for this cat. He has all sorts of mixes in his downloads vault I’d suggest if you have time visit this url: http://djmightymike.net/media/ get a sampler and then download your fist of fury. As a true DJ he is music agnostic (as much as he is renowned for his Naija knowledge). The man just plays anything and makes it sound tight. I don’t think he is the biggest DJ that Nigera has currently has but I’d say he is probably the most entertaining and creative DJ I’ve listened to.

There is a Dancehall or reggae set on his downloads page he did in 2009 if you listen to it all through to the end where he does the US vs Dancehall blends you cant deny his capabilities. Also his Afromentals compilation album is sick – the sax and the Afrobeats… Shit why didn’t I think of that considering I had access to Chris Bitok all this time :-)

2face – Implication (GetMziki Exclusive****)

2faceweb

2face is really enjoying success after coming off his recent win for best R & B act at the 2009 MAMA African Music awards and currently in the final stages of releasing his 2010 new album “Implication”. This is a GetMziki “stolen” from the studio track, that was just released to select few djs and as usual, “don’t forget where you first heard it”. I just got this track today, so everyone is getting to enjoy some new Naija music before the new year in an exclusive way!!!!.

2face enjoys the same “status” in terms of creating a street buzz like most of the musical greats and this song has been making all the Naija blogs go wild. I don’t know if the record label was purposely releasing this track to see what the fans out there think of the music, but this track is fire!!!!!!. I listened to it once and and that was enough for me to know that this song will be doing crazy numbers in the next few months. Djs, if you get caught without this song in your Serato, don’t say I didn’t tell you. They are shooting the video as we speak, which should take this track to greater heights.

Enjoy!!!!

Nosa – Always Pray For You (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Nosa_Nigeria

While Gospel was taking over Kenya, in another part of Africa – GOSPEL was being reinvented by this man here called Nosa (Full names Nosa Omoregie). You’ve got to love Naija R&B coz it brings a bunch of elements to the table. Although to me I think its just the Pidgin English that makes Naija music so sweet. Nosa is actually from Benin City and has been making music for a while now, although not until this track came out did he actually start getting heavy rotation.

My Naija connex tell me “Always Pray For You” is currently the song of the week in Benin City and part of Lagos. Truth of the matter this is the first Nigerian Gospel song I’ve heard especially in Pidgin English. Its crazy – I cant lie, I’ve played it over and over again. Everything about this track just came into place – the production, the composition, the sound, the lyrical content and more importantly the vocal delivery. Nosa just has a beautiful voice… He reminds

P-Square- Danger (GetMziki Exclusive)

Psquare1

The Naija duo of P-Square just released their new album “Danger” a couple of weeks ago and as everybody knows the whole of Africa was waiting to see what they were going to come up with on the new disc. I got a chance to listen to the whole album a couple of times and on this album it seems the duo really never went out to create music from their hearts but were following a “formula” . It seems the “formula” for the new album was have a couple of club records(“Danger”, “Break It”, “Trowley”) then have a couple of records for the ladies(‘I Love You”, ‘Like Dat”) and a few collabo’s. Don’t get me wrong, the album is “classic brilliant” P-Square material but they really do not push the musical envelope like on their previous albums.

The new album has 10 tracks with 3 instrumentals and the amazing part is that the first song on the album “I love you” is my favourite track . Its one of those tracks that really take you back to P-Square’s musical strengths. The duo also enlists the help of 2face on the track “Possiblities” and the duo of J Martins on the track “N No Easy”.

On their first single”danger”, the duo goes hard on the 120BPM range beat by showcasing their musical growth on the first single. It seems that everybody is now doing tracks in the 120BPM range, right from Blu 3, Mad Traxx, Birdman, Jay Sean, The Dream, Shakira to BEP and the fact that 8 songs out of the top 10 songs on the billboard are on that BPM range gives an insight on the “in thing” in music today. I guess its just a matter of riding with the flow.

This song is definitely going to be driving the clubs crazy in the next couple of months. I’m sure most djs will be adding this in their Serato crates on the first listen, since no party is a party with no new P-Square jam.
Enjoy!!!

Bracket – Yori Yori and No Time Feat P-Square

bracket_img

I had promised I was going to post some of the songs driving the clubs/radio/streets crazy in Kenya. One of the other song is by the Nigerian group Bracket with the song “Yori Yori”. Apparently, Yori Yori” means “Sweetness” in the Igbo language and this song packs the dance floors in a major way. The song is not necessarily new, but has been ruling the charts in Naija land for the last couple of months. The Enugu born duo who started off as a trio group were brought together by music at the University of Nigeria and with their style, swagger and musical ability its only a matter of time before they become megastars since they are already superstars across Africa.

I got a chance to get a copy of their album “Least Expected” and the songs on the album are pure fire!!!!!. They have a couple of hit singles on the album, but surprisingly enough their first two singles were “Yori Yori” and “No time” ft P-square. My favorite tracks on the album however are “Gossip” and “All my People” which clearly bring out Bracket’s vocal skills and artistic ability.

Since I’m showcasing Bracket, I decided to hit up the readers with a double dose of their hit singles “Yori Yori” and ‘No Time”.

Enjoy!!!!

Jimmy Flames feat Dr. Frabz – Jangolover (GetMziki Exclusive **)

jimmi_flames_img

Our Naija connects just blessed us with this song today, but looking at the Blog lines it appears to be a slightly older song. Either way it deserves a spot on GetMziki – I am into local Naija music, I hate the new urban stuff thats coming out of Naija studios both in the US and in Nigeria. There is a very thin line between hiphop and the cross breed that has been thriving in Africa over the last few years. I’ve been introduced to a variety of new Naija artists but I felt they all sound like T-Pain or Kanye and not well suited for the GM market (I could be wrong).

As much as we do African Urban music here – I feel as though there is a fine line… FINE LINE. With no general bias there is a lot of music we dont post that comes from East Africa but if we feel it just sounds too Western like something off Power 106 radio out here we normally ignore :-) /. Sio kwa ubaya its just how we want to build the African Urban Music scene from our perspective. But this discussion is for another day.

Here is a classic example of a track that is crazy borderline – the beats can pass for anything, but the lingo is classic Naija – JANGOLOVER ha ha ha ha. I personally love that, lagos boy, Naija boy – whats a Jangolover – is it a JUNGLE LOVER?? Ama a Jango Lover (Like as in Luo Lover) ama it has nothing to do with Lover.. who knows but me I personally am feeling this track – enjoy!

Jay Martins – Oyoyo (GetMziki Naija Exclusive ***)

Naija has this new thing called Proudly Nigerian that’s been going around many products produced and developed in Nigeria. I had to yank this image from Mighty Mike (big up by the way for all the massive Naija tunes). But if you notice that CD it has a small Niaja logo and flag – proudly Naija. It just made me wonder what happened to BRAND Kenya – and the elusive dream of branding Kenyan products – Proudly Kenyan?

Anyway – Not too many people know or have heard of Jay Martins, but the singer/ producer was the man behind the “Good or Bad” hit a while back. Anyway he is back at it again with this big tune titled OYOYO – this is BIG TUNE. Trust me this track has Naija buzzing like whoa! First time I heard it I knew this was a banger – so am blessing GetMziki with this hit.

Enjoy the track
