Rabbit – Tembea (Staki Kukuona)

We have featured Rabbit with “Dodoma” and “Jam Nakam” and he’s slowly proving that he can make good records. There is really something about the track, that got me to showcase the song. I haven’t really placed my finger if it’s the great word play or the chorus. However, the lines that did it for me were:

Tuseme tu ukweli relationship haiwezi
Wewe + mimi = madeni
So ntakuacha kwa sasa nikatafute peni
Ukiinsist tu sana, mami tembea na na staki kukuona

Either way, the track has been getting constant spins on the airwaves and worthy mentioning on GetMziki. The best part about Rabbit, is that he musically does what he wants; and with that, someone’s going to feel it.

Enjoy!!!

GetMziki Summer Anthems by KK

My boy Mike just got back from Kenya and the one thing he has been ranting and raving about (in a bad way). Is that hiphop in Kenya is DEAD. (dont shoot me, shoot the messenger), its weired when I listen to someone tell me about how hiphop is dead yet there is all this music I get from Kenya and all these music videos that I see on YouTube. However if you stop to think about it, majority of the Genge/Kapuka/Afrosoul sound is really not hiphop. Apparently its rare to go to a night club in Kenya and just listen to hiphop and R&B the whole night. Of Course Mike could be wrong and was just going to the wrong spots but there has to be some truth in his words because the number of Dance/Pop Mixtapes I have recieved over the last 8 months has been alarming.

So am posting this Mix from KK which is probably a mashup of many Funky mix CDs but essentially this is currently Kenya’s party scene – someone PLEASE TELL ME this isnt SO. PLEASE TELL ME. Please tell me that DJs still play some Good Ol Snoop Dogg, Fushnikens, Soul Mischief, Das Effex… heck tell me they play Maino, 50 Cent I will take that. But please dont tell me hiphop is dead in Kenya. PLEASE…

Either way KK laced this up real well so I thought I would share it and do a double take with Louis image from his Blog that celebrated its 1yr bday last month.(DAILY STRUGGLE) if you dont know, Daily Struggle has some of the most amazing images of Kenya/Nairobi that I have ever seen. Some photographers take pictures of the plight in the country, some photographers take images of a Country unseen, images that you’d think were shot in Hollywood (check out Jim chuchus The Stingo. However artist like Louis Majanja just capture a moment in life of a Kenyan in the streets. To me thats just an authentic story of our community.

For now enjoy this Summer Anthem.

Mr Blue – Tila lila (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Mr Blue

Finally what I was waiting for, a song that celebrates nothing but pure alcoholism lol. Seriously when you listen to this song back to back you will realize two main things 1) its very repetitive, 2) he only spits about 4 to 5 bars lol. Okay enough clowning, Mr. Blue or on this video more like Mr. Red has grown up so much, I almost thought his music wouldn’t grow with him at all. Its amazing how he has reshaped his brand to accommodate his old fans (mainly tweens) and his new fans this new age youth that like a lot of western sounding music.

There are various parts of this song that seem like they have been engineered (audio or vocals) and then there are parts that he seems to be raw so I am slightly confused. In a way I could hear T.I.D all over this track especially when he pulls his cords in between the chorus. Either way this is a cool club track I would imagine, its a feel good song with no important message to send forward ha ha ha but please lets remember that KERORO made NONINI’s career in Kenya. So to me it may appear anytime you sing about being drunk or about boozing – then you might have a winner… (pass the courvoisier)

Mo plus feat JohMakini – Xray (GetMziki Exclusive **)

I got this crazy Tanzania music I need to push out and I apologize to all artists and producers who’ve been waiting for months for me to post their music. Sometimes life happens, that said lets get into this ridiculous sample. Moplus feat JohMakini (who we just posted a few days ago) on this track called X-ray which is actually off an album appropriately titled “baba wa ukoo” Vol 1. It looks like there is an Arusha uprising of producers or maybe this one producer who loves sampling all these East Coast beats. I dont know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, the jury is still out on this one but frankly it makes the music sound a little bit better – but at the same time I feel like originality is being lost.

For what its worth bless this track let me know what you think.

Joh Makini feat G-Nako & Lady Jay Dee – Kilimanjaro

Joe Makini (real name John Simon) is a Bongo flava artist (Tanzanian) who hails from Arusha. I was wondering when someone from Arusha would come out and just rep their city in a big way, well I guess I dont have to wait anymore. This however is not to say that there aren’t any other Arusha heavy weights. It just means for the first time in my opinion someone is actually bragging about their city and the one iconic thing that’s in their city – the Kilimanjaro.

Joe or Joh as some call him had his debut in 1997 but it really wasnt until 2004 when he became an essential artist in the region when he released “hawapendi”. In 2006 he released Chochote Popote which ultimately went to cement his reputation as a formidable Bongo Flava artist in the region. Today as I sit and listne to Kilimanjaro, I cant help but feel a sense of pride and belonging – I feel happy to be Tanzanian… well sorta lol – but still this is just a feel good song that’s all about repping your city.

P-Square – Forever (****GetMziki Exclusive)

P-Square just released a couple of singles a few weeks ago in preparation for their new album. In the current music market, artists release a couple of singles to really see what fans out there cling to and then release the video to go along with the chosen single. I hav been listening to the new singles and the “forever” track has been one of the tracks that I have been listening to on a regular basis.

P-Square are riding on the strength of giving the fans what they enjoy most. The catchy chorus and quality production create the sound many have come to expect from P-Square.You cannot really fail to see that this amazing duo is here to stay and “Forever” is one of those tracks that people wil be bumping to heavy in the next couple of months.

Enjoy!!!!!

Ajabu – Hello Hello (GetMziki Exclusive **)

So this is Sir Prestige’s next project so I have to be very careful with how I go about making this post. First because Patrick (aka Prestige) is a good friend lol second because knowing Prestige and his previous successes ala ESTELLE in the UK if I say some shit about Ajabu I will end up regretting a few years if not months from today. So I will keep this simple and focused on the product and not the perceptions.

Off the top of my head this TRACK is crazy in terms of production (of course its produced by PRESTIGE) – I however think Ajabu could have come much better especially as a debut track. Her hook seems to be lacking in my humble opinion and I have enough time to digest the track since I go it. To be honest I can tell she can flow so the lyrical composition wasn’t the problem I think the challenge often with artists trying to break from overseas is finding that balance to be authentic and still maintain their new modified cultures acquired while living abroad.

Either way I like the track – its catchy and can grow on you, I am not sure if folks would play this in a club but definitely an ipod chaser and car thumper.

ps. Ajabu is cake though I would be willing to compromise on the music for a date lol speaking of which I understand they have a killer collabo with STL, Prestige why don’t you sambaza that to my inbox. It would be a dream come true to have two cakes on a cover in my books…

Jaffarai Feat. Wyre – Mcharuko (GetMziki Exclusive******)

This track just came out last week and It’s been on constant rotation on my weekly playlist alongside some new Meek Mill, P-Square and some “Bonoko” remixes. Funny thing is we just showcased another track from Jaffarai a few weeks ago but who’s really complaining.

On this latest track, Kenya’s Wyre the “Love Child” jumps on Jaffarai’s latest track “Mcharuko” for an awesome collabo. I don’t really know what “Mcharuko” means but all I know is that the track deserves a feature. I’ll let the track breathe on it’s own. Jaffarai is definitely dong his thing and proving to everyone out there that he’s on his way to becoming one of the most valuable players in Bongo music.!!!!!

We got this track a couple of months ago and just now posting it on GetMziki Quick Hits. Cartel has been featured on GetMziki before so we will just jump on the track. Cartel is one of the few artists who has completely embraced the internet, as a means of promoting his music and new releases. He’s always going strong with constant updates on both his Facebook and Twitter pages. Here is what he said about the Swagga track on his Twitter page

DJ Bonsu – Jam Sessions Volume 2

I love African music, I love African sound, but most of all I love African DJ sets. There is something daunting about playing for an African audience – assuming you get the opportunity to DJ for people other than folks from your own ethnic background. I mean really think about it, how do you play for an all African crowd? Naija guys love their Naija music but dont really care much for Bongo or Genge, South Africans love their Kwaito but don’t really are much for that Naija or that Ethiopian sound, Kenyans love their Genge and tend to like other music but its all debatable over time.

So whenever I get to listen to these international DJ sets from DJ’s from other countries I am always overwhelmed. Essentially a lot of Kenyan DJ’s think they are the best in the region (it could be true however, on an average or on aggregate – there are more trigger happy Kenyan DJ’s than there are Ugandans or Tanzanians), however I think Kenyan DJ’s are pop DJ’s and thats what separates them from any other African DJ’s. Kenyans DJ’s mostly play what they think is current and pop. Most DJ’s from other African countries play a lot of everything.

Take for instance this cat – DJ Bonsu from Ghana (although I have a general Bias to Ghana coz of the obvious relationships we have with Ghanamixtapes and Julz Media) honestly take your time to listen to this mix. Its not about how cool his scratches are or how fancy his blends and mashups are, its just about good African music. Anyway maybe am just talking a lot of nonsense but I like this mix – its just a feel good mix. That second song from Wiz Kid is fire (Kill Bill – Serengeti Record Pool has the video) Billy that SONG IS FIRE….

Madtraxx feat Simaro Lutumba – Skamaress (Jerry O remix)

I am thinking of retiring this song officially, never has one song garnered so much attention and hype in the history of GetMziki waaa!!! But before I do let me do a quick post from my connect in Nairobi called Jerry. Jerry is currently the music manager at Milele FM in Kenya which mostly plays Rhumba, zilizopendwa and other old classic African sounds. However sometimes they venture out to play urban African tunes to which I am much obliged to be a part of. Notwithstanding I have had a few remixes of the Kamares song but I think this one would cap out our Madtraxx, Chava adventure for the month simply based on how Jerry put this thing together.

Jerry mixed his version with the original Simaro Lutumba’s Maya song which in essence just sounds fresh. Listening to it I wish he would have the Lutumbas version ride out a little more but for the sake of creativity this is still sounding fresh. Am posting this because I believe these types of efforts are what make us as an industry just go out of limb to do great things. Truthfully after weeks of arguments and emotional torrents over which version is better – I think one thing is clear both artists were paying homage and in this day and age thats a rare thing to come by. I wish someone would remix Mary Atienos (Adamu na Eva) or Munishis (Kuokoka ndio fashion)… then we would be talking…

Kyraz feat Abbas & Chiwawa – Freestyle (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

I dont know if anyone has noticed lately but we’ve been on a roll in posting new music over the last few days… please congratulate us, please… lol seriously its like there has been this fire burning in our in boxes and our music delivery system that its hard to contain the amount of good music coming in.

So one of my connects – Robert has been on my case about Kyraz for a minute, the last song he dropped featured Wyre – No more that we posted a while back. Though I felt at the time that I really couldnt tell how Kyraz sounded nor couldnt form a real opinion about his skills. I am still yet to get a single that just features him on his own, however if this Freestyle session is anything to go by – then we are money.

First of all let me just confirm this – IS ABBAS AND CHIWAWA all made up? (meaning have they changed their relationship status from “its complicated” to “in a relationship” lol) seriously coz both these cats are doing a disservice to themselves if they are not DROPPING HOT JOINTS like this posted track. Doobiez comes thru on this track like crazy, then Kyraz murders and English verse then a swahili/sheng verse and then letting Chiwawa close the show. I honestly cant thing of a better way to start your career than putting yourself in between these two great heavy weights. Lets make this post simple listen to this sampled beat courtesy of LODWAR. Official.. Official …I love this ..

Rob can you confirm if all these three cats were in one studio when this was recorded…

“Niko juu ya maji kama Zanzibar, Na zi angusha kama msee ako na Manzi – BAR..” – Abbas

Man I love Doobiez man the jama is just too talented – ana mistari minene..

Fauz Noir – Nu Bounce

One thing I like the most about new artists is the hunger, I am often inspired by guys who are fearless and just ask you for honest opinion on their tracks. I however tend to lean towards artists that are able to back up their career path. By this I mean don’t send me a song if you are not ready to support your career with a video, a photoshoot amongst other things that will definitely make your life cycle as a recording artists successful.

So maybe on an average day I probably would have missed this track by Fauz, especially because I havent heard the name Fauz anywhere in my inner entertainment circle. However when he sent me his track this week, he included the audio, the video and images (I LOVE THAT) because it makes my work so much easier. And by that simple virtue I decided I must post the track regardless of whether its a banger or not.

Now lets get to the nitty gritty here – Fauz honestly reminds me of MYSTIKAL (you know Mista Shake ya Ass, and DANGER)… I think he probably will be the first East African artsits with this unique rapping style unless I missed something somewhere. Each time I play this song I just hear a Kenyan-esq Mystikal.. ha ha ha.. that shizz is amazing. This particular track seems to be an ode to Nairobi which is the city thats has influenced Fauz upbring. Through out the song he shouts out all the neighborhoods he has lived in that albeit shaped him and motivated him to be better and to become an artist. Funny enough in his words not mine he says … “I see music and Nairobi so closely intertwined that they form the shape of beautiful women, whom I adore and woo to develop this new style of music called “NU BOUNCE”

So I don’t know if this new music style will stick, I also currently don’t have any tangible thoughts about him as a new artists. At the moment I just think he is different – and DIFFERENT CAN BE GOOD. But give me a few more days to collect my thoughts, I will add them in the comments section. For now enjoy the track as well…. this could be the beginning of something new and fresh.

Bamboo – Foreigner (GetMziki video cuts ***)

We’ve been contemplating on starting a new feature that just showcases new music videos that are shot on some good cameras with some basic concepts that are just fresh. I think if all goes as planned we probably will update these videos more frequently than the music since it appears that artists are quicker in uploading their videos than uploading their songs.

This week I want to feature a video that was shot in a Day in Las Vegas by Emerge Media/ Black Medley (Mike Wanguhu, Roy Wanguhu and crew). I think the reason I love this video the most is because it was so simple yet so captivating. Talk about an affordable video this would be one I highly recommend. Think about it, from start to finish Bamboo is in the car driving around Las Vegas on his way to pick up Kanja and Naomi. The bright lights and the image treatment that Black Medley used on this music video is just fresh. It also helps that Bamboos lyrical content is relevant to the mood created in the entire scene. The close ups on his face and his arm tattoo (repping Los Angeles) just add to the detail that creates the overall metaphor of who Bamboo truly is.

Either way here is the new Foreigner music video – physical copies of this video are available at request for all music producers reading this post.

Hopiho – Nostalagie

Since i don’t speak French, i cant reallly talk about the content of this track, but there is alot of name dropping going on Eto, i guess
naming all the Cameroonian stars or something. But Beyond that Hopio – or Pascal is Cameroonian artiste based out of Nairobi trying to practice he’s craft in Nairobi. Beyond that i will be honest and say there is noting groundbreaking about this track more like a spin or bin it.

Jaffarai Ft Lady Jay Dee – Sio Kweli (GetMziki Exclusive)

Once in a while you get to listen to artists who are out there grinding hard and churning out hits and sometimes hits, but still giving the fans that out of the box good music. One of those artists is Jaffarai from Tanzania who is proving to the fans and other music lovers out there that he’s here to stay.

Currently signed to “Fish Crab Entertainment”, Jaffarai got a future hit single with ‘Sio kweli”. In house producer Lamar cooks up an infectious beat and brings in Lady Jay Dee to drop some “16′s” and sing on the hook, making this song a banger. For all the music producers and artists out there who frequent the site, take a cue and learn from Jaffari and Lamar on how they introduce the track and tag the intro part of the song. I bet Lamar has seen how the super producers from Bangladesh, Just Blaze, Tha Business and Jazze Pha tag and introduce their songs. With so many producers and artists out there its necessary to sometimes let the listeners “aware” on who’s on the track.

Enjoy!!!!!

This track just landed in my  inbox, and i’m not even hesitating to post it, give it a listen there is something of a freshness to it.I  met Lulu before since he works in a studio on the 2nd floor. The first tracks i had from him were interesting but missing something – but i guess the kid been perfecting he’s craft and this track might just be a big hit.

Madtraxx – Skamaress (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Update: this post is being updated over the next 3 days due to the on going conversations about the track*

Update: DELA just sent me a link to her live perfomance of KAMARES (Meanwhile what does KAMARES mean?) – Check out DELA performing the song live

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18W_rn8DNW4&feature=player_detailpage#t=370s [dont worry I was kind enough to Que the URL to start just when she freestyles Skamares]

Madtraxx released this track on Saturday in Kenya at Homeboyz radio and as with all MADTRAXX hits it’s hit the streets running and with so much hype and buzz its inevitable that we would jump in on the conversation and post the track while its still fresh. Our new policy is to release tracks at least a month after they have been released but not when you have something this hot off the plate and already filled with so much controversy.

So first things first Madtraxx track is FIRE… Its different, its unique its probably a much needed change in the music market in Kenya from all the local hiphop thats been going on. Kamares is definitely a word play and creative play from a classic kid tune many of us sang while we were young (if you grew up in Kenya).

However here is where this track gets fuzzy, for many folks in Kenya who dont know about two years ago I believe Joint ya Chava and crew (Koroo and Vyba) produced and performed a similar track called Kamares. Their version by virtue of Chava’s specific production skills was big in the US but unfortunately I dont think it really crossed over to the East African radio and DJ waves. So its not a surprise that some people didnt immediately recognize the hook after listening to Madtraxx hit. I personally dont have any opinion with regards to whether Madtraxx jacked the song or if indeed its been jacked – specifically because both songs took advantage of a tune that we created when we were young – so maybe we all need to get some sort of recognition for creativity.

However I think its sad that Chava didnt/doesnt get as much props for his creativity as this MADTRAXX song has and will especially onces its starts going into heavy rotation. To me I think this is another case of the Kenyan market not really caring for the US/Abroad- Kenyan Music market. There are so many hits that are churned out of home studios here that are bangers but because they really dont get the push or the right artists to embrace their appeal they often just die. I have to reiterate to me its okay if someone bites your style – it means you are doing something right somewhere…. I dont know if Madtraxx was biting anyones style here however there is a certain alarming resemblance of these two songs (from a hook perspective).

GIVE US YOUR THOUGHTS!!!

As we try and go through all the music we have been getting, some of the tracks will be showcased as quick posts. The first one is from Miggy who has been featured here before with “Best Dj” and “Ligi Kubwa”.

According to Miggy, the track Is “about how am upset about some crazy things people can decide to do. Its a war against such people”. The track was produced by Gylloh of G-Hood Ent.

The beat and subject matter are definitely positives in the song. I wanna know what people think of the track!!!

MwanaFa – Unanijua Unanisikia(GetMziki Exclusive)

Mwana FA also known as Binamu is no stranger to the GetMziki folk and has been a consistent artist in Tanzania hip hop circles. If u have been following his musical journey, then you know that some of his hits including collabos that still rock clubs include ‘Alikufa kwa Ngoma’, ‘Naongea na Wewe’ ‘Mabinti’, ‘Bado Nipo Nipo, ‘Usije Mjini’, ‘Msiache Kuongea’, ‘Unanitega’, ‘Dakika Moja’ and ‘Habari Ndio Hiyo’.

On this new track produced by Hermy B At B’Hits studio, MwanaFa is literally asking people whether they “know him or hear him”. Its one of the tracks that u really gotta listen carefully while digesting the lyrics and punchlines. The video also incorporates the four pillars of hip hop namely MCing, DJing, break dancing and graffiti writing in a unique way.

Great work MwanaFa and Hermy B!!!!!

We’ve been quite for a few days, lifes happening real fast around us and we are busy trying to launch other new services that we have been working on for years. That story has become like a broken record today, however we are hopeful this time round.

That said the music shouldnt stop – here is some brand new remix of Toxic’s Uzushi track remixed by and with K-NEL the hardest working Kenyan man in EU. There is something interesting about KNEL love him or hate him he has a certain vocal projection thats almost impossible to ignore. His Branding is on point and he seems to know which songs to jump on and which ones not to jump on. Was this the right song to jump on? You be the judge – for what its worth I love the BEAT.
