Ugandan Music

Mya Baganda – Say No (***GetMziki Exclusive)

Mya Buganda (in the middle of the pic) is a member of the group Blu 3 (Black Ladies from Uganda 3) that also features Jackie Chandiru and Lillian Mbabazi. The ladies have all been pursuing solo carriers as can be seen by Jackie Chandiru current hits Gold Digger and Overdose that are packing dance floors across E.Africa. I have been saying this for a while but Ugandan music is on the rise as far as churning out hits, that are crossing over worldwide.

“Say No” is Mya’s official first single from her debut album that will be released this year. I’m not really so sure the angle her management team is rocking by picking the name Mya, but time will tell on the name choice. M. Baganda is staying in line with what her fans are used to in terms of her brand of music. She’s also definitely on her way to capture new listeners unfamiliar with her style, sound and accent.
For now rock to “Say No”

PL@Y – Excuse Me Sir (Mr. President)

Michael sent me this song on Oct 9th to commemorate the Ugandan Independence day. Evidently I slept on it. The song was inspired by a lot of the political, social and even radical events that occurred locally in Uganda during 2010. Though it is not a political song or move sanctioned in any particular political direction, it is a general social opinion that many Ugandans as well Africans in general might agree with (PERSONAL OPINION OF PL@Y and not GETMZIKI).

Overall I think the flow is wicket and lyrically Pl@y seems to have delivered on the tracks promise which is sharp vivid message and catchy hook to complement the beat. Id like to give credits where its due or deserved:

Jackie Chandiru – Overdose and Gold Digger

I’ve receieved a couple of emails from various djs requesting Ugandan music, which is a rarity, since most requests are for Kenya, Tanzania or Naija music. Maybe some of the djs are gearing up for the celebrations for Uganda’s Independence Day in October. Either way, I decided to showcase some music from Jackie who is currently ruling the airwaves in Uganda.

Jackie Chandiru a.k.a Jackie is one of Uganda’s leading female R’n’B artists and vocalists. Jackie kicked off her musical career in 2004 after she emerged as one of the winners for the Coca Cola Pop stars. This led to formation of the Blu 3 which became one of the leading girl groups in Africa. In 2010 Blu 3 went on leave thus leading to the girls working on solo projects.(Courtesty Reverbnation)

Jackie has been churing out hits as a solo artist and she’s one of the females who’s ruling dancefloors in East Africa. You’ve most likely bumped to her music either on the radio or at parties but either way, her music is slowly but surely catching on to the rest of Africa. We’ve had all this tracks since late last year and I’ll catch some flack especially from my pal Dan Mixa if I tag them as exclusives since he’s been consistently playing this tracks on his sets from last year.

For all the djs out there requesting for some Ugandan music, some two new additions on your Serato for the next party. For everyone out there, enjoy and overdose on great Ugandan Music from Lugbara. Enjoy!!!!

Davis Ntare – Sheka Sheka (Festus Production)

1

Okay this is kind of odd for us to make two similar posts of the same artists/producer but damn it Waithaka and Festus have stolen my heart for the next few days. These remixes are fire – a few months afo we posted Davis Ntare’s original track last week Waithaka sent me this remix which I am barely unpacking today as with some other hot bongo tracks. Its time to wake up, but lets just bless this track while I unpack the other songs of the week.

Update:
This track was remixed by Festus and not by Waithaka. For more info on Festus production visit – http://www.facebook.com/pages/Festus-Productions/198744833472168

Davis Ntare – Sheka sheka (Waithaka Ent/ Festus Production) by getmziki

Davis Ntare – Sheka Sheka (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

Brand new music from Uganda’s own Davis Ntare just dropped a few weeks ago, and this particular track was blessed by my man R-Kay. I love R-Kays tunes he works hard to incorporate a lot of African sound and raw instruments (guitars, drums and ho hums). So for Davis to get his debut blessed by R-Kay I think its just a good look.

Now if y’all don’t know Davis he is the recently crowned Tusker Project fame winner. TPF4 (Tusker Project Fame 4), this is the second time a Ugandan has won Tusker Project Fame since the competitions inception. I think TPF2 was won by Esther Nabaasa and TPF3 was won by Alpha who is from Rwanda who as I gather is also PAM awards best artists. So for Davis to win this thing its big news for the Ugandans. Personally am not surprised, I’ve always said Ugandan men can blow (can sing)… so by virtue of their DNA (lol) Anyway Am loving everything about this track, I see a long career ahead for Davis if this is his preferred direction.

Above is Davis’s proud moment – am sure he will live to remember that night. Coincidentally am done ranting and raving about Tusker/EABL sponsoring Tusker Project Fame. Its obvious am the only one who cares or seems to think its a poor move on their part. You’ll never see Heineken or Budweiser sponsoring such shows because it just promotes teenage drinking if you ask me. Tusker is openly going after the young’ns. Reminding them that they soon will want to start boozing… I think as a community we can be more responsible and we need to start putting checks and balances early instead of pretending to put some big fat ass billboard on Waiyaki way and pretending to care. Anyway who cares at this point 4 seasons later its obvious TPF is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Enjoy the banger …

Keko – Alwoo (A Cry for help) (GetMziki Exclusive ****)

My boy Howee sent me this track a while back but truthfully with being busy I slept on it for a while. But last week I started playing it over and over again and it hit me – apart from STL, this is probably the next best EAST AFRICAN female lyricist ive heard in a long time. I mean this girl can spit no doubt. If I was to count right about now I would put STL on my top fav fives, Keko and then possibly Nakaya.

Initially I was like this chile sounds like a dude, but once you get past the hoarse voice you will realize the songtress actually has a message and carries a crazy flow with it. I like the local dialect intergration (ALWOO) which means a cry for help – some conscious rap will always get you far. Look what its done for Ukoo fulani mau mau…

KEKO is a young up and coming Hip hop star from Uganda whose rise to fame came early this year (2010) with the releases of ‘’Fallen heroes’’ a duet with the Hip hop canvas 2010 ”How we do” and of course her first single Alwoo(cry for help) which we are debuting here today.

Mixtape Fridays: Pam Awards 2010 Nominations

The Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM) nominees were just announced this week and the list was greeted with questions and boos as artists cried foul.

The PAM are the biggest annual national music awards in Uganda, that were first held in 2003 and since 2006 there has also been categories for musicians from other East African countries. I have always insisted that there is no way to really tell how transparent all this award shows are since everything they do from choosing the nominees and category winners is shunned in secrecy and everybody knows so well that in Africa, people associate secrecy with shady dealings. The controversy is really so huge that various artistes including Jose Chameleone no longer even value the awards and actually also asked never to be nominated again.

The nominees for the song of the year are

Bebe Cool – Kasepiki
Samalie Namatovu – Omukwano Gunyuma
Jose Chameleone – Basiima Ogenze
Dr. Hilderman – Amelia

If you really follow Ugandan music like I do you should know that the biggest record in Uganda hands down was “Stamina” by Kenzo. The “Stamina” star Eddie Kenzo and his Big Talent Crew have also decided to pull out of the Pearl of Africa Music Awards, since according to them they should have been nominated for the “song of the year” category. I will also post Kenzo’s “Stamina” song for people to decide for themselves.

Bebe Cool Feat AY – Chap Chap

We got this track a couple of months back and with the duo just releasing the video, plus a few requests here and there from different people we saw the need to blast this track out there.

We have been getting tons of music and videos from Uganda and from what we are hearing, they are really stepping thier art form in a very positive way. The Ugandan people also really support their artists by buying cds, which in turn creates some revenue for the artists just off cd sales. This is a sharp contrast to other parts of Africa where artists usually make money off touring than cd sales, as a result of too much piracy.

On this track, which is tearing up the clubs in Uganda, Bebe Cool team up with Bongo heavyweight AY for a “Chap Chap” club banger with both artists taking turns talking about wanting a “mpenzi” (Lover) quickly.

“Nataka mpenzi chap chap
All di gyals dem say
All di boys dem say”

Zani Feat Levy Longomba – Mpelekela (*** GetMziki Exclusive)

Zani is an artist/singer, actress and model born in Uganda and currently based in HollyWood, California. The Ugandan-born singer is also the sister of Shanks Gumaras, formerly known as Shanks Vivie D, a pioneer in Ugandan music and often referred to as the Ugandan king of dance hall and hip hop.

Currently signed to Afro Merica Records which is owned by Lovy and Benji, Zani’s past hit songs include “Ndoowa”, “Sam Tonjiwanga”, “Kikambwe”, “Sembela” among others. She is currently in the studio working on her new album and I’m honestly waiting to see the overall direction they take with the album since most of the stuff I’m hearing is just great music.

The song “Mpelekela” which talks about a failing relationship was produced by Lovy Longomba and written by Zani. I’m really feeling this track right from the production to the song layout and lyrics. The vocal performance from both artists is just great which makes the track really shine well. I wanna know what people out there think of the song.

Mith from Uganda is part of the group Klear Kut comprising JB, Langman, Papito and Navio. He is currently in the process of releasing his debut album “Agambaki” a Ugandan word that directly translates to “What are u saying”.

He slid us this new single “Fire” last week that was released on his birthday Spetember 8th. This new single features Ugandana artist Tickie Tah.

Grace Nakimera – Osobola (GetMziki Exclusive*****)

We here at GetMziki always strive to showcase music from different artists and create that platform for thier music to be heard across the world. One artist we have’nt featured here but who we should have is Grace Nakimera from Uganda. She’s from Muyanga, Bukasa and depending on who you talk to in Uganda, she’s considered as one of the top RnB artists in Uganda.

Grace started off by doing the female remix version of Ngoni’s successful record “Digi”, but her entry into the music scene was more noticed when she was featured in yet another GoodEnuff produced hit “Ani Akumanyi” one that got her more noticed than the two musicians she partnered with for the mega hit, Gatimo and Paragon.

One thing about Grace is that she’s the pioneer in Ugandan music in terms of pushing the musical and video concepts of her songs by showcasing things such as wet bikinis and water hose wet dripping girls in videos. Her past hit songs include tunes like Anfukula, Kiva Kuki, Sukuma, Kawonawo and Onyambaga Mukama.

We just recieved this track from our Ugandan connects and wanted to showcase it to the masses out there. The track is one of those mellow songs that just capture your ears in a smooth way. I’m not fluent in the Ugandan language, so if anyone out there can translate what she’s singing about, we’d appreciate it. Either way the track is hot!!!

Enjoy!!!!!

Radio and Weasel – Heart Attack (GetMziki Exclusive)

Its Friday and I want get this track out that i just got this week since we’ve really been slow on the music updates, which will change as we are working out on some final website details. We have featured Radio and Weasel on the site before and you can check out this link for the previous posts. They are currently on tour in the US.

On this song I will copy some excerpt’s from the GetMziki team when we posted various tracks from the duo. Here is an excerpt from Leo when he posted the Zuena song. “I am almost compelled to say that Mozey and Weasle are going to give P-Square some true competition – Coz lets face it these cats can sing no matter how you look at it. I am really feeling this dancehall – reggae – upbeat patois (Uganda – or Luganda) uptake on music.

Here is what I had to say about thier music when I posted the Kuku track.

“Radio and Weasel are the “Gucci Manes ” of Ugandan music. It seems they are on everybody’s track. I also get new songs from them every other week and their music portfolio is just too huge to mention. I said before that they are the “group” in East Africa that will be ruling dance floors in a crazy way in 2010. I’m sure once promoters catch on to their music catalog, they will be the group that will be packing arenas and selling out shows across the continent”.

Judith Babirye – Wanjagala

I get tons of “music related” emails everyday whether from artists or producers sending me music or djs requesting music. Most people are region biased when it comes to what they listen to or groove to which means they miss out on the great music coming from African continent.

One of the emails I got this week was from one of the djs aksing me what was hot in Uganda right now in terms of Gospel music, since he was going to dj at a wedding and he needed some Gospel dance floor packers. I sent him a couple of songs and on that note decided to showcase Judith Babirye. If you’ve never heard of Judith before, then its about time you start venturing out of you music comfort zone to listen to that great music out there.

Judith Babirye is a power house in Uganda gospel circles and her past hits include Nzijukira, Newaayo and Yesu Mulamu. She’s a big figure in Ugandan Gospel music just like Esther Wahome and Ruth Wamuyu are in the Kenyan Gospel scene. Here is one of her quotes when asked about her music. “I thank God who makes me sing music that touches people. Many of my fans shed tears of joy in churches after listening to my music. I feel blessed.”

” Wanjagala” is a great record that is a hit all across Uganda. ‘Lwaki Mukama Wanjagala…bino ebyensi abanji byebawanawana sibirirna…Sirina kalungi kona…naye Mukama Wanjagala’

Batabazi- Rise Up

I want to start off the post by sending a message of condolence from the GetMziki team to all the people who lost thier loved ones and for the loss of life in the Uganda bombings during the soccer world cup finals. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Ugandan people.

Various Ugandan artists have been releasing tribute songs and songs also talking about the incident. One of the groups Batabazi just released this song “RiseUp” talking about the incident. We have featured them on the site before with thier song “Dirty Shame” featuring Jackie of Blu 3.

“Rise Up” recorded in in Luganda and English, is a song encouraging all the Ugandan people to stay strong amidst all the things currently going on in the country.

Chameleon Feat Kelly Rowland, 2face, Samini, Krotal, Awadi, Rola, Jozi – Everywhere You Go (GetMziki Exclusive)

With only 44 days to go before the start of the 2010 world cup in SA, tons of artists and companies are releasing various songs and commercials to showcase the event considering its gonna be a month long soccer madness showcase. One of the companies, MTN just released this World Cup song “Everywhere You Go” by Dr. Chameleon featuring an all star cast from across Africa and the US. The cast is Kelly Rowland from the US, Nigeria’s 2face Idibia, Ghana’s Samini, Cameroon’s Krotal, Senegal’s Awadi, Rola, South Africa’s Jozi, Zuluboy, and Kwesta, Slikour.

The song is a fusion of modern day R & B that is featured on the first part of the song while the second part incorporates traditional reggae-tone kicks and snares. My own personal opinion of the track is that they tried to have a “best of both worlds” track that resulted in a song that you would hear on your favorite urban radio show. I believe the song would have been great if they had incorporated some African sounds and vibe to it, considering that tons of African artists were going to jump on the track.

Enjoy!!!!!

Batabazi feat Jackie (Blu 3) – Dirty Shame

BATABAZI started making music in 2007. They are based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The name was chosen because the members wanted something to symbolize who they are as individuals. The word “Batabazi” is derived from a Luganda phrase “okutabaala” which means to wander or move from place to place. Batabazi’s roots are hip hop but are very versatile given the dynamics of the group and have recently done music in R&B, Reggae and Afro-Beats.

Batabazi has gone through some changes with some of the original members moving on to other opportunities. The group is comprised of five individuals i.e. four stage performers and a producer. They are PG (Mpagi Kironde), Jerome Black (Jerome Jjooga), Tasha (Roseann Kawesa), Gera (Gera Kiwanuka) and Mayor (Anthony Bbosa Balagadde). PG & Jerome Black are two of the founding members of the group, which started as an underground rap group. PG raps in English, Luganda and occasionally does Patwah, Jerome is a lugaflow specialist. Tasha, Gera & Mayor joined Batabazi a little later. Tasha and Gera are primarily singers and occasionally will rap. Mayor is an upcoming producer with a rich musical background in piano and traditional instruments, and in the past has had the opportunity to perform at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York. He is Batabazi’s producer.

Batabazi is yet to release an album; however in 2009 they released a mix tape that was 20 tracks deep. The mix tape included their hit tracks “Turn it Up”, “Uganda Nka” and “Binsobedde” a song they did with Chagga, a Ugandan artist. They have recently done collaborations with other Ugandan artists i.e. Peter Miles, Blu3, Ragga Dee, Vamposs, Navio and Raba Daba. “Cheater” is a hit song they did with Peter Miles. Another of their recently released songs is Dirty Shame (feat Jackie of Blu3), a song that made is making waves on Ugandan music charts. Other recently released songs are the club bangers Buuka and Tukomyewo. They have also remixed their hit anthem “Uganda Nka” that includes Ugandan artists Navio, Raba Daba and Ragga Dee.

Swangz Ave Feat All Stars- Mr DJ

ent001px

Let me start by saying that this track is a Ugandan big hit from last year that features a who is who in Ugandan musical talent. The all star cast is Radio & Weasel , Rabadaba, Peter Miles, KS Alpha, GNL Zamba, Navio, Viboyo, Caesar and Benon.

We’ve had this track since mid last year and its not until last week that my main street connect Dan Mixa told me that that this song was voted one of the top 10 tracks in Uganda in 2009. Let me say that Ugandan music is alive and kicking and I can clearly see 2010 being the year that they penetrate into the African market like the Naija music.

We have tons of Ugandan music and we are slowly going through the songs to start showcasing most of them. One thing I’m gonna do is put a rubber stamp of approval on the duo of Radio & Weasel. Once everybody else “catches” on to their movement, its going to be a frenzy. Like always, don’t forget where you first heard it.

Aziz Azion Feat GNL – Nakupenda (GetMziki Exclusive)

azizazion

My Uganda connect send me a bunch of Uganda songs and I’m slowly listening and shifting through the music. One of the songs that immediately caught my ear is this song “nakupenda” by Aziz Azion. We have been slowly but surely been featuring music from Uganda on the site, so this is one of the additions. Aziz Azion is a household name in Uganda and most of hist tracks are know for their signature guitar tunes. He’s a monster on the guitar and started off by playing guitar for some of the biggest Uganda bands.

Since we haven’t featured Aziz here before I’m going to showcase two of his songs. The exclusive new track “Nakupenda” is one of those feel good tracks that GNL drops a couple of 16′s for a crazy collabo. The second track is “Nkumila Omukwano” that was released early this year and is one of Aziz’s biggest songs to date. I had sent out this song to a couple of djs a while back and the response was that the song was a keeper. I wanna know what people out here think of Aziz. Enjoy!!!

Juma Nature Feat Jose Chameleon – Mikiki Mikiki (GetMziki Exclusive ***)

jose_juma_nature

Normally Dona posts all the Bongo Flava which is kinda contradicting of our publishing expertise because I am the one from TZ and Dona from Kenya – but he seems to have a better ear for Tanzanian hits than I do, so he has been responsible for 90% of the Bongo hits on this website. However when he posted Mikiki Mikiki I told him I want to ride this one and shine with it because I felt like he wouldn’t do enough justice for this crazy beat.

Also more importantly just for the sheer fact that I saw my man P-Funk all up on this video, I was super/extremely excited. Its always nice to see your old crew still holding it down and making good music. P-Funk is one of my long time friends and has been holding down the whole Wanaume Halisi family (which coinsidentally as I understand split into two groups – So I guess there is a splinter group lead by Chege and crew and the original Wanaume Halisi group lead by Juma Nature who put this whole TMK crew together).

If you have been an avid Bongo Flava follower you will notice Juma Nature has a signature singing/rhyming style thats unique to him only. I personally call him the Lil wayne of Africa – because he sings his rhymes and cries on his songs. P-Funk as a producer I think understands the Tanzanian market and understand Juma Natures capabilities. So whenever these two go into a studio, its magical. This song is one of those songs that will get anyone off their seats and just jumping and bumping to the beat. Its a classic Bongo Flava beat thats upiddy and happy. For a minute there I thought East African music was lost and gone – after listening to all these Urban based tunes and instruments in tracks… But thank God we still have some elements of Benga/Zouk/Bongo left in some producers hands.

To hear Chameleon on the track also was like whoa!! I cant say enough about this track –

H.B Toxic – Mwagala (GetMziki Exclusive)

hbtoxicSince we dubbed this week Uganda week, it’s only fitting to showcase HB Toxic. The group comprises two former members of the Obsessions dance group, Hellen and Brenda, thus the name H.B. I really did not know who they were until sometime last year when my main street connect “Mixa” sent me their hit single “All I need” with AY and told me that that song was jumping off in tha streets and clubs.
On reading up on them, I found out that they were two former members of the popular group “Obsessions” and that their strategy to come up in the music industry, was with their raunchy dressing and wild dancing styles so as to separate themselves from the other Uganda lady groups out there.
One thing I know for sure is that they have a good management team which has seen them bag all sorts of collabos with various artists from AY, Chameleon and Mega Dee plus making sure they have shows all over the world. They will be touring the US in July alongside Jose Chameleon, so people can get a chance to see them perform live. This is a 2009 song that they just released. Right now, is it simply their beauty and sex appeal, that is making them get all the shine or is it their talent???. Enjoy the song!!!!!.

No one on the Internet seems to get the spelling or the artists names of these two correct, I doubt if I will be able to do justice to them but I am sure their music will speak for them. Funny enough DJ Dona just posted a track that features Weasle so I guess it will be Uganda week up in here.

This track has been out for a while, there are two or three different versions of which I am not sure which one was the key album track but the second variation (which I have attached) seems to be a remix off the P-Square (one like you). Both versions are sick – I am almost compelled to say that Mozey and Weasle are going to give P-Square some true competition – Coz lets face it these cats can sing no matter how you look at it. I am really feeling this dancehall – reggae – upbeat patois (Uganda – or Luganda) uptake on music. Its a whole new level of flava. Ugandans have embraced swahili in such a big way. Its such a super formula to make sure all their music penetrates the 3 markets in the region (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda).

Ill keep my ears open for more from this duo, so far am loving every tune they have – I will share more tracks as the weeks go by. Enjoy!
