Nonini feat Chege & Lady B – Killa Moja (GetMziki Exclusive ****)

I rarely make a post with a video first but this one deserved all the accolades it could receive so I upload it instead of putting a picture of Nonini. Lets face it you already know how he looks like but I dont think many of us understand the amount of work and effort he puts into his career and craft. Last weekend Nonini blessed the Oakland Kenyan community with his presence and some of his greatest hits. Truthfully I have to admit this is the first concert of its type that I enjoyed – mostly because of the performance but also because of the set up and the entertainment value.

DJ Slim put together an accompanying band to help Nonini harp through his music from hit to hit, if the video above is not evidence enough of the delivery then I dont know what is. A lot of artists come to the US for show and tours but normally the entertainment value is just the same – its the same set up. One of the worst African shows I have ever been to is an AWILO LOGOMBA show where the dude started asking for money after 2 songs and had the audacity to get off the stage. In retrospect I blame the Promoters (pun intended) because if as a promoter you will let an artist do that to your credibility then you both have the same work ethic. However when an artists gives 110% by himself it’s always a refreshing break from the monotony. In fact the only thing that sucked about the Nonini show was the fact that by the time Nonini got on stage the bar had closed (do the math go figure). Either way DJ Slim out did himself this time round I have to admit – coz the Show was on point from start to finish – so big up to you and your crew – I hope you can maintain the responsibility that comes with successful shows!

That said, as usual I got a chance to hang with Nonini for a while catch up and of course yank this track from his HARD DRIVE. Nonini’s album is a must have and to me this TRACK number 8 of course produced by Musyoka is probably his biggest song thus far. I know many guys may not agree but I think by the time Pro Habo is done with the short film and music video they are doing for this song – EVERYONE will agree – KILLA MOJA is the Killa song in that album.

I cant say enough about Nonini I respect the man and love him not only as an artist but as a person… Tumetoka mbali – keep doing your thing.

ps. that chile in the video that says …. “BUT I LOVE GENGE” Killed me – TEN NIL… ha ha ha ha.. nilidie mzeiya…

Chege F/ Wahu and Themba – Mkono Mmoja

We are playing catch up and will be “quick” posting some tracks so that we get them out there.  Chege and Temba are part of the Wanaume TMK family which I like referring to as the Wu-Tang of Tanzania Hip Hop. We have featured Wanaume TMK and Chege On GetMziki before, with the last post being on Wahu’s “Running Low” remix.

On “Mkono Juu” Chege and Temba enlist the help of Wahu for a great collabo. The 3 really shine well in the track, with every artist going hard on thier part. This is one of those tracks that you let “breathe”, since the track needs no “hype”. Its a banger straight up!!!

I feel bad that I have never said or written anything nice or positive about Wahu ever since we started posting tracks here. Its not like I have anything personal against her, I just haven’t been super impressed with the current music she has been putting out. I felt that there wasn’t anything unique about her style or technique. Luckily whether I thought her style was not unique or genuine it didn’t really affect her success in anyway whatsoever. She still remains the most successful Kenyan female artist to date.

The first time I posted the the original version of this song, I expressed a somewhat brush opinion of it and of the delivery, which ofcourse didnt get me so far. I eventually got my hands onto this remixed version of that song, played it a couple of times and voila it started sinking in me. It got me thinking. Maybe some artists are just good on delivering re-mixes or collaborating with other folks, because damn it this remix is hot. Putting Chege on this mix was probably the best idea ever. Chege a Tanzanian superstar has a way of humming and adding adlibs on tracks that just brings the entire experience of the song to a climax.

So I take my words back slightly. Maybe Wahu is a superstar in her own way, coupled with her striking and vibrant personality she makes up what Kenya or Africa looks for in an artist. As a person Wahu is a lovely human being – I like her a lot… musically however I may not share the same opinions with the rest of Africa. I reference Africa a lot in this post because WAHU won best African female artists in 2008 so there has to be something folks saw that I didnt. Anyway I digress. Here is her hit track Running Low.

ps. The guy who shot this video must really consider getting a make up artist. Maybe you dont think that people look at the videos in depth but …. and … maybe its just me but aren’t Chege’s lips ashy or the jama just smoked some bhangi before getting on set? Look at the first 20 seconds when Chege stars hollaring!! LOL …
